sporting clays at Bisley

Hi guys, I wandered down to Bisley last week. I can't begin to say what a great facility it is, honestly I never expected anything like that at all....wow!

I'm wondering if any AR members shoot sporting clays there? Would you like to join up for a couple of rounds? We can blast clays and tell impossible hunting stories.

It's kinda not exactly around the corner for me or I'd be happy to join you.

However, the are several local candidates that I'm aquainted with that probably can't shoot their hat size at Sporting Clays but I can highly recommend them for the "impossible hunting stories " part .....

So there I was, having just shot this charging narwhal on dry land with my buddy Solvi and had just made a start on the third bottle of deathwater, when the police showed up and made us throw it back.

You should have seen the horn on that fellow.

The narwhal, not the policeman....

I also shoot a few clays but bisley is ok if you're feeling flush and more crucially lack the connections to shoot clays on a farm in Pirbright, all of 5 minutes away, where 15 quid buys you fifty clays however you want and all the bacon sandwiches, tea and cakes you can eat.

If you had a connection he would tell you that it officially happens on the second Saturday of each and every month from 2pm onwards.

If you don't have wheels yet the connection could pick you and a couple of passengers up on his way through, he's sure.

Well connections are always good to have even if they are somewhat shady characters.....luckily I'm a shady one too. And I've got wheels, 4 little round pieces of rubber marked Pireli or something like that, attached to a red ford! It's not as much fun as my 4X4 chevy truck but then a proper truck wouldn't fit on these roads...but I digress. Does said farmer allow shooting any time or just when the gang of outlaws shows up?

Now that you mention police it reminds me of one of the last BBQ's I put on in Canada before leaving. Who'd have thought they needed 4 police cars and a helicopter just for me?

All they had to do was ask nicely, and the ticket for disturbing the peace was a little over the top. So was the lecture about explosives being dangerous and the part about acting my age wasn't very welcome either. The best part was being asked if I had been drinking and replying with satisfaction, "what the F**K do youthink?"

Unfortunately I lead a dull life and have few stories. There was that night with the stripper and the bouncer.......

I understand from Carlos, who made the drop, that he needs 3-4 guys to make it worth his while on an informal day, but sadly at least 6-8 to warrant getting the catering truck out...

If all you want to do is shoot some clays, we have guns, will travel and and needs about 3 days notice.

Congrats on the wheels, suggest you contact Kiri about the destruction of some furry things, maybe even convince him to come down.

You've got my cell haven't you?

Oh and lastly am I talking to you or your wife this time, the last time I offered to pick one of you up it had the potential to go to a spectacularly good verbal gaffe....

My friend, trust me on this if nothing else; do not tell these stories on this forum.

There are men here with long memories and cruel minds, some are never allowed to forget their small mistakes past.

By a sort of information MAD, we have an arrangement that what happens on deployments stays on deployment.

I'll tell you about the houseboat in Amsterdam, the Thai waitress and the depth charge when we meet.

I recently shot a round of Olypic trap for the first time since about 2002 I think.

By the end of the day Ben wanted more and more for the gun he lent me so I'm going to have to reconsider my strategy!!

I have a sporter of my own though so could be tempted to Bisley for a round or two.

Incidentally a few of us will be shooting at the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust's charity shoot on the 2nd July if anyone wants to join in. There's a hog roast afterwards and plenty of banter should it should be fun. Teams of 4 or individuals can shoot (without the flush).

Janek will probably try and bet some money off of me so Bisley could be good secret practice...

I know the muddy field in Surrey well. It is by no means a formal sporting course, but good fun nonetheless.

This Sunday looks good, if we can have a rough head count by say thursday friday I can organise it with the farmer.

£15 for fifty clays and food/drink, cartridges avaliable at £5 a box on the day, fibre wads and sub no.6 shot only.

It's literally five minutes from Bisley in Surrey.

Last time we shot it at our club me and my training buddy got 06 shots out of one target which cost £1 each !

A couple of Africa Trips back, we did have a clay shoot-off.
I did rather better than I'd hoped since, having shot the stock off my Beretta on the Doves the day before, I had to borrow guns to shoot my turn.
I managed to lose to Diggs in the semi-final since I was using his old SBS made of rusty pipe and baler twine lashed to a chair leg.
He said it was some sort of favoured antique hammer gun.
Anyway, he very kindly got mine professionally re-stocked when we got back and it shoots just fine now and its just me that's the problem.

All of which tall tale brings me to the point that, if I can get away on Sunday and get over this nasty dose of Man-flu, I could come too!

Is the Artist's Rifles club still there and if so, do any of you guys ever go there?

I understand the old one closed and they opened a new one elsewhere on the grounds but I'd be surprised if it has the same atmosphere of the old one.

I knew they'd moved but hadn't realised it was that long ago...... time flies I guess.

I've never been to the new location but have been into the old clubhouse many, many times. It always had good pub style lunches, good beer and really stuffed up leather furniture.

The perfect place to go after a mornings shooting.

I should say that previous service with the Regiment didn't used an essential condition of membership. Some people were allowed to join without that requirement. (Probably (at a guess)not many though)

As with all these things knowing the right people makes things easier.

Just to upset a few, the current owner is an ex "them" (lax) Muslim from Turkey.

Naturally therefore I have had lunch there a few time and it remains a rather nice, if slightly parochial in a very Army sort of way, retreat.

The food is good by Bisley standards but rather over-priced for what's on offer.

Last time I was there I met a lord who did a bit of hand modelling and was there having his man measure the benches at Shorts up so he could build a range back at the manor!

Cool place.

You can borrow everything you need but you need to send me a pm with your full name and address so I can pass it on to my club secretary.

We can also do both, shoot in 200 in the morning and shoot clays in the afternoon?
