I just subscribed to "Precision Shooting".

I subscribed to Precision Shooting for years. It was part of my International Benchrest Shooters membership. You can certainly learn a lot about shooting from that magazine although it isn't marketed toward hunters. There isn't much those benchrest competitors don't know about firearms. Best wishes.

Twenty years ago Handloader and its sister magazine Rifle were the best, but now they are a mere shell of their former selves.

Today Precision Shooting and its sister The Accurate Rifle are the best.

I think Handloader and Rifle are still the best, all-around magazines ....Dave Scovill does an excellent job of editing Rifle and his cadre of writers are second to none, especially Ross Seyfried , John Barsness and Brian Pearce.........

But no one has replaced Bob Hagel or Ken Waters at the old Handloader and Rifle magazines.

I always thought the best rifle magazine was a toss up between those in a Winchester Model 70 or the Browning A Bolt. Mine always feed real well with no problems at all.

Now in print, I only pick up Handloader and Rifle Shooter anymore. Got tired of reading the same article 4 yrs later in another Peterson owned magazine all the time, under a different title.

At $4.00 and $5.00 or more an issue, they don't say anything new anymore and haven't for years.
However Handloader and Rifle Shooter do give me useful information and some enjoyment when I buy one.

No reflection on the gun writers, more like a poor reflection on the editors as they are the ones who publish the editions each month.

PS, Accurate Rifle, Small Caliber News, and most definitely Varmint Hunter.I agree with some of the comments about Handloader, and Rifle mags., they were a lot more in days gone by-- over commercialized now.

I would be inclined to agree with Hammer. I am impressed by the quality of "Precision Shooting".

On the other hand, Dave Scovill does an incredibly bad job in editing "Handloader", and this man is more than anybody else responsible for dragging a formerly excellent magazine down into the gutter. Shame on him. :-(

Rifle, Handloader, Successful Hunter, Muzzleloader, Blackpowder Hunting, Traditional Bowhunter, and Primitive Archer are the only magazines I currently subscribe to.

My favorite writers are Ross Seyfried, Ken Waters, Elmer Keith, Jack O'Connor (bet they like that I put them together!), Skeeter Skelton, COL Askins, and John Barsness. I like their style as well as their content. However, the first three have always got the content as well.

Some writers set me off. Not because they are wrong, or even because they repeat themselves, but because their style is so irritating.

What I want is new info (a recurring theme in these posts), accuracy in the details, and an engaging writing style. I like that a true love of the subject comes through my favorites' articles.

I find Varmint Hunter worthwhile, but not much else. I thumb through the gun magazines at a nearby store and am fortunate if one article listed in the index interests me. I've all but given up. I don't give a hoot about guns of the British empire, or tracking wounded leopards, or ancient Winchesters and Remingtons, or Newton Arms relics. God but they are boring me to tears. I just can't get excited about the stuff they produce. Most of the writers are tired, stale hacks with nothing new to say. This is an industry that needs to be revamped badly. Best wishes.
