FjoldSmacked the squirrels
Went out this afternoon and smacked some ground squirrels. I had bright sunshine and 60+ degrees so all of the squirrels were out, the only problem is that we've gotten such good rains that the grass is almost a foot high. So it involves alot of glassing and snap shooting at squirrels going into or coming out of their holes.
The first sets of babies are just coming out with their Moms so I had a lot of targets and the next month or two is going to be great. I brought my 10/22, 223 (XP-100) and a 22.250. In three hours I set up on three different towns and shot 54 rounds of 22.250, 26 rounds of 223 and 40 rounds of 22 rimfire. I didn't keep count of the hits and misses but heard enough "Thwocks" to be satisfied.
I used a portable bench that I bought with a gift certificate from Cabela's (Trigger Happy Shooting Bench). For less than $100 it worked great and was light enough to load in the back of my truck easily. It worked especially well with my XP-100 (223) and this was the first time I've felt comfortable shooting past 200 yards with the XP.

I hope "Smacking the Squirrels" has nothing in common with " spanking the monkey" or "choking the gopher" LoL;
couldn't resist it..... too much time on my hands this morning.
Cheers and good shooting

R FlowersFjold, I know you are trying to make us jealous, but it won't work.
I am not far away, up near Fresno. We did not get to shoot any ground squirrels today, sort of overcast and dreary still.
BUT, my dad and I collected a couple of darned nice wild hogs this morning, lots of fun. We will shoot lots of squirrels in a couple of weeks, I would guess. By then I will be eating lots of sausage.
Keep after those varmints.

FjoldLOL guys. My brother works for Santa Clara Fire Department and he's trying to get down here for a shoot now. I have an open invitation from a Plant Manager friend of mine who lives in the hills east of Fresno. As soon as my knee heals up I'll be up there for sausage also.
