Coyote season just opened October 1 here in NY. Fur won't be priming up for a bit, so for now they are just creatures of opportunity should they walk out on me during the archery deer season. I hunt a lot of nights, so the other factor is that fox isn't open until Oct. 25th - sucks putting in a night and having to pass on a fox.

I've shot a couple of 'freebees' but haven't started calling yet. The freebees had no coats yet. I'm really getting excited to get out there...........

I called one in a couple of weeks ago, but it was movin' so fast, I couldn't get a rifle shot off at it before it turned on the afterburners and wuz GONE!
I should of had a shotgun.
But, I can't wait for the snow to fly here, and the ferns will be down too, so I'll be able to see better. Now, the ferns are so high you can't see close to the ground. Coyotes can run rings around you and you never know they're there.

I went deer hunting in Idaho on the opening day and say 6 coyotes where the hay fields meet the sagebrush looking for mouses.

Caught one intent on stalking up on a covey of quail. One less coyote in Idaho.

You can all year round here in Maine. Wink The only time there is a season is on night hunting of the good ol'yote. I asked the Maine IF&W if it was legal to use night scopes, yes!
Here is what is stated online, and in the manuals you get when buying your license.
Coyote:
During daylight hunting hours: No Closed Season
Night hunting: December 16, 2009 through June 1, 2010
Note: A coyote night hunting permit is required in addition to a hunting license to hunt coyotes at night.
Bag and Possession Limit: None

As a disabled vet, I only need to renew one license from them. That would be my ADC license.

I have yet to shoot one, but always find on my way out I was busted. Found out by new tracks or fresh scat. I need to work on my setup I guess!

Where I hunt in the Texas hill country, we've have very few coyotes. Hunted this lease for five years. Have only seen one and I nailed him. Three weeks ago I was sitting in a tri-pod bow hunting. It was about 6:30 and the sun hadn't come up yet. A group let out about 200 yds. away from me. That was the first time I've heard any coyotes there. Then last week I was again sitting out early in a tripod and I heard two different groups let loose. I use a foxpro fx3 and it is devastating on fox. I made one stand last Saturday evening and one Sunday morning, but no coyotes. Gonna try a little harder between now and the first of the year, as I will be there much more during deer season.
