BuliwyfVarmint/Predator Hunting: Ear Protection
On a prairie dog hunt what type of ear protection do you use? If you're calling predators do you even use ear protection?
Thank you.

R FlowersWhile predator hunting I do not wear hearing protection. I am not going to be firing that many shots and I want to be able to hear well.
When shooting smaller varmints like ground squirrels or prairie dogs I wear protection. When roaming the hills here in CA to shoot ground squirrels I wear foam ear plugs, they are cheap, disposable, and work well.
When shooting prairie dogs I often wear the foam plugs AND a set of ear muffs as well. You can do lots of shooting in a day out there and you need all the protection you can get. I wear the type of muffs that have the wires behind your head, not over the top. That is so I can wear a wide brimmed hat while out on the prairie.

FjoldLike R Flowers if I'm roaming around shooting ground squirrels I wear the foam plugs. If I find a high concentration of squirrels I'll set up the portable bench and put the muffs over the plugs. I think that I'm going to buy a set of the electronic earmuffs to use for this and for coyote set ups.

skb2706I shoot pds with my son so it is important to me to not only have hearing protection but to be able to hear him if needed.
I use attenuating protection....Peltor Tactical Pros.
For coyote hunting I could only wish to have enough shots in a single day to warrant having ear protection.
