swifter 220Mange. Mother natures way of thinning them out. Shame, this time of year they should have prime pelts.

SnellstromLocally, and I mean right around where I live and a bit further east where I Antelope hunt the Coyote numbers this year were extremely high. I can't tell you how many I've seen this year and I must admit the ugly ones I killed were the only mangey ones I've seen.
I've never seen any Coyotes this bad except in pictures.
This last year started off really high in rabbit numbers too.
My personal thoughts are high rabbit numbers will boost Coyote numbers, then when the carrying capacity of the range is exceeded something like Mange pops up to thin them out, back to balance.
I know it's more complex than that but that was my "quick" explanation.

k-22hornetSnellstrom,
I usually coyote hunt up and down the I-76 corridor.
2 years ago, in December, my son and I were on a ranch near Brush. On the way back to the ranch house, what looked like a black Terrier-type dog crosses the ranch road with a coyote. My son starts to get his rifle out while I look through my bino's. The black one was as hairless a coyote as I've ever seen, with a pink patch over his right kidney area. No shot was taken.
2 months later, in mid-February, I am on the same ranch and see the same pink-patched coyote, and this was after 2-3 nights of -15 degree temps. Never did get him, but, man, these coyotes are survivors!
Are you N or S of I-70?
