Mange has taken a heavy toll on coyotes locally and now we're seeing a tremendous surge in jack rabbits. It's not uncommon to see six or seven togeather and this afternoon I counted 22 in less than a half mile along the road. Out in the country it seems like every pole or fence post has at least one moving with the shade.......and some no longer moving.

believe it or not a similar thing is happening in the rural areas of Orange County CA. You no longer here the coyotes at night and the cotton tail population has exploded. Curious???? roger

We've been seeing a strong surge in both Jack and cottontail populations here in Colorado and the Coyote population is quite high too. If we didn't have so many Coyotes the rabbits would be outta control, as it is I've shot 2 (jackrabbits) a night everytime I go out to my farm and as I'm shooting two 5 more are running out the back of the field. I keep thinking that as I shoot more and more I'll see less and less but so far I see the same numbers in the field evry time I go to the farm.

Every year I go out to the panhandle of Oklahoma for a weekend of pheasant and quail hunting mixed in with shooting just about anything that moves. About 4-6 years ago the coyotes got the mange out there and really wiped them out. Now the jack rabbits and prairie dogs have exploded. I probably saw more jack rabbits last year then I have seen in the past years. Not to mention the prairie dog populations went through the roof; however, now the dogs have the plague bad and has really wiped them out. Funny how nature takes care of her problems. I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see the rabbit numbers start to drop for one reason or another in the near future.

Thats what the animal lovers won't believe. Let 'em go and they'll die off when nature takes over.

Shoot 'em up several times a year and they'll stay healthy for many yrs.
