OK g�ys, The discussion on this forum last year about a walk around rifle has resulted in the successful fulfillment of my desire. It�s a CZ 527 carbine that was originally a 7.62 X 39 rebbled to 6 mm PPC with a Leo compact 2 X 7. I�ll be changing the scope to a Leo 3 X 9 compact shortly. It shoots like a dream (.7 with factory Sako ammo) Douglas bbl. Weighs six pounds and is thirty nine and a half inches long. As Jeff Cooper says, as handy as a swagger stick. JBelk rebbled one for my son with a shilin (sp?) that shoots .4 with his handloads. Ain�t life grand?

Bob, and even useful for those itty bitty Hill Country deer you guys have down there! Glad the project worked out. Have you shot the 6.5 yet? Dutch.

Hi Dutch, No, the �smith hasn�t finished the 6.5 yet. He�s only had it since December,2001. I can�t believe two years for a simplec chambering rebbling job. I finally got tired of waiting and took the one for the 6 mm to another �smith. I wish I had talked to JBelk before I started these two projects. He did an excellent job for my son. The guy tells me the 6.5 will be finished when I get back home in late September. Then I�ll be asking lots of questions about fireforming, reloading, etc.

Hey Shortmag, No, didn�t get the pistol yet but he still has it. Or did when I left Texas. I�m ticked off at the owner because he�s the �smith that is taking so long to finish my 6.5 PPC project. Besides I�ve found another old guy (70) who�s an excellent �smith and he just finished a 257AI on a Mexican Mauser and is working on a 300 Winnie Enfield project for me. If I buy that pistol now my wife will divorce me.

Ol Blue, Feeds fine. I�ve shot almost forty rounds of Sako factory ammo through it without any problem. My son has shot his a lot more working up loads, also without a problem. My next deal will be to change the CZ rings to Conetrol "custum" rings with the Daptar bases. It�s such a neat trim little rifle and the conetrols will compliment it. I also want to finish the factory stock with some hand rubbed oil, probably linspeed.

Shortmag, The Mexican Mauser is an intermediate length small ring 98 Mauser. There were three models, 1910, 1936, and 1954. Jeffeoso has built several rifles on this action including a 376 Steyr which is also going to be my next project. Makes a neat trim rifle.

I�m fine now, had a quad bypass operation in April, finished the therapy, and feel better than I�ve felt in 25 years. I plan to shoot a buff on my 70th birthday which is in five years.

I share your feelings in wanting a lighter walk around varminter. I started with a Sako L461 single shot action and a McMillan fibergrain stock. The lightness allowed me to put a Hart 22" SS heavy barrel on it, and still get in at about 8.5 lbs. with scope. I had it chambered in .222Rem. Mag. It's light enough so that at the end of the day I don't feel like a spastic cripple.
No more 10.5 lb varmint rifles for me. I'm just too old to handle it any more. Best wishes.

Hi Cal, My wife gave me a 527 in 222 last year for Christmas. I weighs less than eight pounds with the scope but, of course, doesn�t have the heavy bbl. Prettyest wood I�ve seen on a 527. I guess it�s hit or miss on the CZ stocks. They must not grade the walnut. All the other ones I have are are about "A" but this one is "AAA".

I've heard this before from shooters who have purchased CZ's. It seems to be a grab bag. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. In any event it appears to be quite the rifle, and I wish you much happiness with it. Best wishes.

Sako 22-250 Hunter with Leupold 4-12 - the quintessential walk-around varmint rifle.

Sako AI laminated 22-5/8" sporter in 223 with 4-12X Elite 3000(may soon get swapped to a 3-9X Leo),a bit heavy on the butt end, thanks to the laminate but it's slick.The CZ's are real slick rifles.Local guy has one rechambered to K-Hornet.

If I ever have the time to use my walking varminter its a Weatherby SPM in 22-250. I have worked up loads for it using 55gr V-Max. I named it Mikey because no matter what I loaded in it it shot well.

Tikka 22-250, luppy3.5x10,55gr BT'S loaded to 3200fps, or 243 sako {old vixen},luppy 3.5x10,75gr sierra's loaded to 3200fps. Both are deadly, lightweight, effective to 400yds.Just my view on this subject.

Winchester Featherweight in 223. 2 X 7 Weaver Scope. VERY accurate little rifle, is light to carry. Adequate for Blacktail deer, especially with a Barnes 53 gr XBC.

Was looking at a Ruger LiteWeight in 223, or even their 16 inch compact in 223 ( the laminated one with the stainless barrel), for my son this christmas.

My favorite rifle for critters is an Interarms Mini Mauser 223. Light as a feather, 0.7" groups. My deer rifle, a light weight G33-40 Mauser in 6mm Rem, also works well on varmits, is accurate and easy to carry around.
