Thinking about purchasing one of these for a second varmint rifle any one out there had some experience with them. What kind of accuracy have you had a loads recipe?

I have 7 savage varmint rifles in the house now they all shoot great. Most will do .5 with little load development. 4 223s,1 22-250, 2 308s with good bullets they shoot very well.

All other criticism aside, (looks, etc.) I think that most unpredjudiced, people will agree that the new Savage rifles are dollar for dollar some of the most accurate (out of the box) guns built.

What kind and weight bullet have anyone found works best in this 1 in 9 twist barrel for varmints?

I've used used Savages all my life, took lots of stick from the great unwashed because they weren't chic. Now it's O.K. to have a Savage because they're good value for the money.

Go figure, Savages have always shot exceptionally well.

The entire .224" bullet line-up will work in those 1"in9" Savage barrels, that was their concept and it was a pretty good idea for Savage to make them that way.

I cannot say what the best bullet for EVERYONE is, but my best groups in my Savage are with bullets in the traditional .223 Remington weights, 50-55 grain bullets. Real stand outs for me have been the Hornady 50 gr. V-Max & the Speer 50 gr. HP TNT, both with VV N-130 powder. Just bug holes.

Buy it, load for it and go wear it out - and have a great time while you're doing it!

Absolutely. They are accurate. If you pony up a few more bucks you can get the laminated wood stock, which looks pretty good compared to the black synthetic.

What is even more impressive is how accurate they are compared to some "better" rifles that cost a bunch more.

More law enforcement agencies are finding the cost effectiveness of these rifles which means more accessories.

I just ordered the 12FVSS and it should be in tomorrow. I'm excited to shoot it after all of the good reviews. This is my first Savage.

I agree with Flippy 100% on the laminated stock. Savage is pretty good at listening to their consumer desires and the black plastic stocks they currently offer have improvement potential by simply having an injection mold made after their laminated 12 series varmint stock and getting on with life. The laminated stock is one of the all time best varmint stocks I've ever shot (Savage.....are you listening?)

Don't get too excited, though - do it by the numbers, go over the rifle, check it out, clean the gun & barrel, mount a decent scope with good bases & rings and you are goona have ball.

You mentioned something about a second varmint rifle.....when's #3 in the cards?

I remeber picking up my first Savage in the gunshop, cycling the bolt and handing it back to the clerk...YIKES is that rough. Cheap POS I thought.

My friend just got one in .17HMR for $269 and it outshot my $900 Volquartsen. Sold the Volquartsen. Gave up on the 17HMR and bought a Ruger #1 in 204. Same friend bought the Savage 204 and it is almost on par with the Ruger, for about $300 less.

I think they are ugly, clunky, and rough, but boy do they shoot.

Good choice. The .204 RUGER is what the 17HMR wants to be when it grows up.

Well I got the savage .223 put on a Mueller 4-16 mil-dot scope on it and took it to the range. My first reloads grouped .55" at 100 meters and was a 9 shot group. I used 50 gr. V-Max bullets and 25.5 gr. H-335. COAL was 2.3".

WOW and it is not even broke in yet!!!!

What is even more amazing, is how much it DIDN'T cost.

I, too, am looking to Savage for another varmint rifle. My current choice is the Mod 40?? whiuch is offered in 22 Hornet only. I have always wanted a K-Hornet and thought this might be the right start.
My problem is: the action from the picture on their site, looks very much like the Anchutz 64 smallbore action. I have doubts about the ability of that action to hold a K-Hornet. Do any of you Savage guys know more about this??
My only expoereince with Savage is owning a number of the Anchutz smallbore target rifles, which at that time were marketed by Savage.
I would consider one of the other varminters, but they all seem to be stainless steel, and I just can't stand to see anything that ugly in my gun closet.
