CaptJackAxel- you would have to be 50yds or closer to have any effect with buckshot. You might get lucky with a rifled sabot slug out to 100yds.
It would truly be close quarters yote huntin. The only time I've been that close was from a tree stand and one time I walked through a dark barn when the coyotes were trying to eat the afterbirth from a newborn calf.
I'll take a 243 or my 30.06 anyday

glenn asherMy father has killed a bunch of coyotes with #4 buckshot from an old bolt-action shotgun, in front of hounds. It worked, after a fashion, but when he went to a .243, he never looked back. If you want to try it, he used old MK IV Winchester #4 buckshot, buffered, I think it was, and that old JCHiggens gun would pattern them pretty good. Still, I would seriously consider the rifle, though, it's hard to get a shot these days without a good pack of hounds running that coyote.

yotecallerI like to use My Browning Auto 5 with 2 3/4 inch 00 buck or no.4 shot buck.If you do your job by calling them in it should be no problem with a 12 Gauge shotgun.

jstevensWe used to run coyotes with hounds and shot about half of them with shotguns and 4buck. It will flatten one out to about 75 yards if your gun patterns well and you shoot a little high. We killed over 100 every year, so I've had some experience with them. When calling them I like to go with a friend and have one with a rifle, one with a shotgun in case one pops out running up close.

Bob in TXA lot of hunters enjoy close quarters coyote and fox hunting with a shotgun. I also recommend #4 buck. There is even a club in Oklahoma that calls them in and uses shotguns exclusively.....more of a challenge. I think I will stick to my 22-250 though.
Good Hunting,

DreamerIf I think that I am only going to see a coyote when calling due to the terrain I will use a rifle (243), but if I feel there is the slightest chance that a bobcat or fox will come in I will use a shotgun. I have had success taking coyotes and cats with 3" lead BB shot with 26" barrel, imp. modified or full choke. The only maker that I have found is Federal (Premium). I bought a box of Heavi Shot 3" #2, but haven't tried them yet. I like shooting BB's or #4 buck vs. OO buck as I have had better results in the field and when patterning.
