DigitalDanRe: 22LR Subsonic HP's VS Raccoon at 15 paces??
I generally expect a lot of movement from brain shots on any animal. There is typically a few seconds pause after dropping in a heap, then the acrobatics begin. It does not call for follow up shots, assuming the bullet actually entered the brain. I use a lot of subsonic ammo in the form of CB shorts/longs and caps(CB and BB), and match ammo as well. Their velocity is typically low enough that you won't gain much if any advantage from a hollow point if such is to be found. Lastly, the only way I know of that will render an animal inert with certainty is to seperate the brain from the spinal cord.

old4x4A few minutes ago, I shot my 2nd 'coon (1st one was 2 weeks ago) out my back window using CCI 22LR subsonic HP's. I had to shoot him 3 times and the first shot was a head shot thru the top of the head. He rolled around for 10 seconds, so I slipped him a couple more. Range was about 15 yds. Do they tend to roll around with fatal head shots? Also, is my ammo sufficient (possibly solids?) Subsonics are quieter (hee hee). Sure raises hell with the
f@#$ing squirrels in my birdfeeders which is what he was after.

groundhog devastationFatal head shots on varmints can lead to some serious "body movement and spastic" behavior!!! If I (or someone shooting with me) shoots a groundhog in the head just right, (usually this happens with the 22LR,22MAG or 17HMR) you will get a violent forward thrusting of said varmint, totally spastic reactions.......bad enough to wonder if a second shot is needed....never is!!! Over in a few seconds!! Kinda like the old saying, "running around like a chicken with his head cut off!!!"(Been there, Done that!!! both with the chickens and the varmints!!) You want to see real fun with the subsonics?......shoot them in a suppressed 77/22 or 10/22!!!!! You can kill multiple crows at the same feeding station using that combo!!!! Real fun on bigger stuff? 300Whisper!!!! Others will never stop eating or foraging!!! "Well ole Susy just fell over dead!! More for me to eat!!! "pffft"!!! Ole Marge just toppeled over!!! Must have been something they ate!!! "pffft"!!Lights out on the stubborn ole b....!!!" GHD

beemanbemeI've shot literally hundreds of trapped coons in the head. Using a .22cb at @5'. Always a frontal shot angled so the bullet would range into the body. (buyers don't like extra holes) I would kinda draw an X between the ears and eyes and aim for that. Doing that, all the coons ever did was fall over dead.
