Old Elk HunterBest 30 caliber varmit bullet?
I have used Hornady's 130 gr 30 hollowpoint in the
308 Win for varmints for over 30 years. What do you use in a 30 caliber?

Mark DobrenskiSlam dunk for me is the the Speer 125 TNT. It is incredibly accurate and the most colorful bullet I've ever seen out of a 30.
Now if I am shooting chucks at long range (450 plus) then I will go with a 168 MK or a 165 Sie HPBT or a 165 NBT. Oops I also forgot about the 155 Palma, it'll do as well.

sakoI like 125gr Sierra sp and NBT 125gr out of my 308 under 200m, 150gr NBT at longer ranges...

pdhntr1OEH,
For pds out to 400 yds or so, the Hornady 110 gr. V-max out of my 300 Winny at 3700 fps. (There isn't a graemlin that represents fingernail size pieces spread over a ten foot long area so you will have to take my word for it)
400 to 1000 yd pds the 175 gr. SMK.
For IdahoVandal style crop damaging varmints, 150 gr. SMK placed in the neck or cranium with a .308.

groundhog devastationIt's a toss up!!! 110 grain VMAXS from a 300SAUM at 3650 are truly DEVASTATING on varmints out to 500 yards!! The 125 SPEER TNT's at 3550 are just as devastating out to 500, but offer the added luxury of going to 6,7,800 yards quite efficiently!!! And DEVASTATION is a given!! All in all, I'd say try the 110VMAXS and the 125TNT's.........more devastating, "know you been there" bullets ain't available yet!!! The Nosler 125 BT's are accurate but just as in the 22,6mm, 6.5mm, .277, .284 diameters, results vary too much!!! One will blow the hell out of a varmint(deers is varmints too!!) and the next one will give you a "pass thru" reminicent of SIERRA MK!! GHD

jjmpspeer 125 tnt''s iv''e pushed em 3500 fps out of a 308 winchester, scary accurate 4 the price they can''t be beat,300 yrds is a chip shot, mine i had molyed before you could buy em that way.

there like lays potato chips you can''t stop with one!!!!!! enjoy!!!...jjmp..

Papa 260I agree it is the 125 gr. TNT. Not expensive, shoots sub .5 MOA and very explosive at 3200 fps from my 308. The 125 B.T. is very good as well but at twice the price, I shoot the TNT's.

Mark Dobrenskijjmp-tell us (please) that you really didn't push a 125 at 3500 out of a 308...

270WSMMan3500 for a 308 would be impossible. I am only getting just above that with 90 grain loaded at almost max in my 270WSM. It must a typo.

f224I like the 125gr TNT & the 125gr Bal-Tip's. Both work great, but the Tnt's are a bit cheaper.
31 January 2006, 07:25
VersifierI like Sierra 110gr HP's, but the 150 SBT's that are my regular deer loads are what my .308 is generally sighted in for, and I have used them on the occasional varmint. The 125gr FNHP designed for the .30-30 does a great job on them too, and really expands at the higher velocity. All three bullets are MOA shooters in my rifle, with the 150SBT's approaching .5MOA.

I do know my loading stuff jjmp and your load is exceeding the velocity of a 125 Gr. Bullet out of a lot of 300 Weatherby loads for the same bullet weight.

01 February 2006, 10:04
FlippyI can’t find ANY loads for ANY 125g bullets in a 308 Winchester that are listed even close to 3500fps.
Most of the 100g bullets are not close either.
Maybe it was a
25 GRAIN bullet?

jjmpmy load was 125gr Speer tnt bullets litely molyed..9.5 remington lg rifle primer..w-w= winchester western brass

...powder winchester 748,(53.4 grains)...col ..i didn''t write down, 5 rounds total they were all shot over an ...Oehler 35p cronograph, witnessed by two 1,000 yard high power shooters that were fire-forming and brakeing in their newly built custom 1,000 yard high powder rifles, both of them were useing KNP custom cut rifle barrels, mine is a custom 28 inch cut rifle barrel, there''s that magic number

i refered to in one of my earler posts.my barrel is a custom cut rifled barrel made by mark-chanlyn of ..Rocky mountain barrel works , located in colorado, the date was...march 11 th,2000 place was CRC= colorado rifle club....them''s the facts

VersifierThem's might be the facts, but suggesting that anyone else can do it in a factory (or even a custom barrel) is contrary to the basic reality that the load is seriously overpressure for the cartridge and is very likely to turn an older rifle into shrapnel. Not to mention what it will do to the shooter and bystanders. Then, when it was tactfully pointed out to you you threw a verbal tantrum. Maybe you need to develop a maturity level corresponding to your pressure levels. Frankly, I think your attitude is unproductive at best, and dangerous (or fatal) to an inexperienced shooter/reloader who might be tempted to the false belief that he could safely duplicate your results. Just my opinion, YMMV.

Even with your 28" custom barrel and being 1.4 grains over Max for that load you would still be only getting 3300 fps! Thats giving you 25fps extra per inch and 100 fps for extra powder!

Chop901I'm loading 51 grains of IMR-4895 in Winchester brass with CCI primers with the 125 grain Speer for my 30-06. All I can say is WOW!
Right now, I'm working on getting a load for the Hornady 130 that will hit the same hole at 200 yards.

jjmpseeing that this thread has come to lite again, I must in all honesty tell every reloader, whether a NEWBIE or SEASONED PRO man or women,..............DON''T DO WHAT I DID!!!!! normal guns can only take so much pressure, beyond that they will blow-up!!!!!, enjoy our sport be safe.....be imformed, and don''t try and make a magnum out of a normal caliber, my pride got the better of me on this one,i''m sorry!!!!! regards jjmp
