22lr for coyote
My question is, would a 22lr take down a coyote close range, less then 20 yards,i have a coyote problem they are coming into my backyard and sometimes on my patio, they probably smell my dogs which are dachshunds(great dogs for small game tracking)anyway any thoughts.

Skinner.
A .22 rimfire will kill coyotes as I used .22 short HP's to dispatch hundreds of them in traps. A single shot in the ear or between the eyes and they're dead. And I've shot quite a few not in traps with a .22 rifle as the opportunity arose, but I'd prefer to see a centerfire used.

Roll EyesYour 22 LR will do the job of getting rid of most. You probably will shoot 1 or 2 that will run off and die and eventually they'll stay off your poarch. holycowroger

Sure, if you put the bullet in the right spot. I use mine if it's what I have when me and Mr. Coyote cross paths. It's not what I take if Iam going coyote hunting. I like to use my Sako 17 Rem or 223. Lou

CCI Stingers would work best

You probably have food out there in some capacity. Dont feed your dogs outside or keep food out there.. Maybe you have a cat hanging around.. Shoot them in the chest and try to put it on the lungs for your best chance of humane death, and a decent sized soft target for such a small bullet.. Its possible they are after those tasty little hot dogs you have , but sounds like they are near starvation to be messing with you.. disease may eventually take care of that. A friend of mine hunts coyotes here in montana, said eveyone of them he shot last winter had the mange.. dave

Within the parameters you noted -- 20 yards or less -- the .22 LR will suffice, though it is certainly far from a coyote cartridge. At close range, you could even try a brain shot if you are condifent enough in your firearm and abilities.

A lung shot, though, may be your best bet. A bullet such as the Winchester Power Point or CCI Velocitor would be my choice for such work, though any high-speed HP through the lungs should put down a 'yote within 100-125 yards.

Not my first or second choice, but I have done it, and would do it again. CCi Stingers were in the 10/22 when it happened

They might run a 1/4 to 1/2 mile before dying, but they won't be back.

Well just a thought, but if you were shooting a semi auto you can get at leasta couple into them generally with a 22.
Stick the first one where it will do the most good, base of the ear or between the eyes and also the side shot into the lungs.
And then with the absence of recoil just put a couple more in him before he can get to moving and for sure he won't go far.
The only shots I would stay away from are shoulder or frontal chest shots, almost assured they will run a long ways and may live and suffer a long time.
Lungs or brain out to 50 yards and he is toast, I have killed them at over a 100 yards dead as a mackeral with a lung shot and plain jane solid lead bullets.
Carried a single shot 22 for years when I was a kid while gathering cows on the ranch, many, many coyotes got a fatal surprise from that little Ithaca.

Had a friend who used a suppressed 10/22 and night vision scope on them. Headshots as described above, probably 80 yards and under.

Baited them with 'chucks, etc.
