My new Prairie Dog Rig

Doctor DMy new Prairie Dog Rig
Last fall my wife bought a used Savage Model 12 .223 at a pawn shop for me. Gotta love a wife like that. I think I'll keep her.
Anyway, the trigger was awful so I fixed it with a Timney. It now breaks at 12 ounces with no creep or overtravel.
I despised the tupperware stock so I replaced it with a Boyd's thumbhole varminter. It came grey/black. I stained it with Brownells military stock stain.
I was loosing the sight picture on recoil so I added lead shot under the barrel channel and action. It now weighs 15 lbs and doesn't move under recoil. I had my gunsmith glass bed the action.
I mounted a cheapie Eagle Eye 6-24 x 56 mildot scope I had laying around.
I tried 4 different 40 grain bullets with 5 powders and finally settled on Nosler Ballistic Tips over 25 grains of Reloader 10X. They chrono at an average of 3,797 fps.
100 yard 5 shot group
Next I moved out to 300 yards and fired 10 shots. The wind got three of them.
Not to bad for a grand total of under $700.

My dad told me once that if you're gonna kill a rattler with a chainsaw, use the top of the bar.
You definitely have the accuracy thingie under control...

Good shooting!

And, I LOVE 12 ounce triggers....

swampshooterGood shooting and a good shooting rifle. I'm never that lucky, that level of accuracy always costs me three times that much. Love the stock too, looks good.
velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

rcamugliaAwesome shooting! What weight bullet in a .223 goes 3700fps?!

KT29I've also had very good accuracy out of my Model 12 .223. Yours looks like a keeper also. Congrats.

I love the 40g Nosler BT pushed by 28.0g of AA2460. They chrono @ 3685 +/- 10 fps and turn ground hog innerds to jello. DRT!
You are going to have some serious fun with that rifle.
Well done!

ChiefR53Great shooting rig, looks like it and the wife are keepers.
Is the barrel stock. I would expect the standard model 12 to be matte.
Thanks
Larry

Thanks Larry, the Wife has bought about 6 guns over the years. I'll definately be keeping her.
Yep, factory barrel. It is matte. Must be the sun.

RonECongradulations, on the wife, the rifle and the shooting!
Quite possibly the first ever target posted where the group was in the middle of the target and not off to one side or high or low.
Odd when someone posts a target to brag about thier group size and quite often the group isn't even on the bull.
Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

Tyler KempThat barrel must be aftermarket? Stainless on a blued action? Either way, very nice!
Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!
Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

AI22-250My wife didn't buy this one, but I finished doing my first barrel change on my Savage 12FLV... I choose a 28" match Stainless McGowen hand-lapped (1:8 twist)6.5x47mm Lapua. The rifle has a Leupy 6.5x20LR/T w/varmint reticle, Farrel 10moa base with Leupy rings. I added a tact. bolt handle and shortened the spring on the Accutrigger for a solid 1 1/2 lbs. The Choate stock isn't anywhere a beautiful as yours, but it's stable and comfortable.... I've broken in the barrel with 50 rounds (ouch on the cost of Lapua brass), reloading data compliments of Walt Berger, thanks. Now all I need is a good trip to the West Desert for some long range coyotes.
