Yote Question
Saturday was the gun deer season opener in Kentucky. I have never heard more coyotes in the daylight hours than I heard this weekend. I shot a big male yesterday morning. He was traveling with another across a pasture as bare as a freshly mown lawn. At 7:00 a.m. yesterday, I heard a couple really howling.

Then, yesterday afternoon, a yote came to a point just beyond my view and barked for at least 15 minutes. After barking twenty or twenty-five times, it howled. Up until that point, I thought it was a house dog or something. Though I have tried several times, I have yet to call in a coyote.

What is causing the increase in vocalizations? What should I do in this situation meaning what types of calls?

They're out eating dead deer and gut piles. They aren't hunting,so they're more vocal.

Ive had the same situation here in N.Y. The yotes are really vocal, starting this past Thursday (11/11/04) and every night since. I agree that they are hitting gut piles and dead deer, this is are fourth week of archery season and the deer and hunters are more active and that means lots of guts and dead deer around. The reds are quite active also at twilight, seen quite a few and even missed one the other afternoon with the bow, should be some good yote hunting this Dec. and Jan. Gun season starts this coming Monday (11/22/04).
