Does anyone have any tips/info/stories about groundhog hunting?

varmintslayer, WELCOME TO AR! I had a pretty good pic of a VA groundhog posted on here under the title of "Boone and Crockett Groundhog" but the pic is gone for some reason! I managed to kill 74 woodchucks last summer using my 22 CHeetah MK 1. I killed one at 675 yards - my best kill to date.

What cartridge are you looking at and what distance are you looking to kill them at - as a maximum?

Make sure you have a good and steady rest of some sort.

I live in Christiansburg VA and I love to hunt groundhogs more than any other animal. I am shooting a Rem. 700 in 22-250. I especially enjoy long shots at the critters, but I feel the most comfortable shooting at about 200-300yds. I use a bipod for most of my shots because I most always hunt open fields and my 16x Burris scope helps me to see them at long distances.

varmtslyr, Back in my "school days" at VA TECH(class of '78) I had permission to hunt groundhogs on all the land from Interstate81, down Rt8 to the drivein restauarant at Riner, turn right and go to the 4 way and then right all the way to Int-81at the Radford exit! A little bit of ground! And a lot of groundhogs! NO MORE!! Must be a thousand houses in there now! My weapons of choice back then were a Varmint Special 22-250 and the old trust tried and true 700 in 25-06! That rifle was known as "DEVASTATION SUMPREME" or "DS" for short! It only came out for the 400 yard or longer stuff! "Little Guy"...22-250 took care of the lighter duties! Those were the days!! GHD

I never shot anything down there, but I am VT, Class of 1988. I really enjoyed my time down there, before political correctness took over everything. Was last down there in Feb of 1992; it had sure changed in just 4 years. I guess now the big student parking lot near Whittemore is buildings and there are dorms up on the upper quad. I've wanted to drive down for the day, but have never gotten the time. It's a good school...

I don't think there is much in life that can compare to a day pounding the fields after woodchuck. It's not as thrilling as sex, but pretty darn close. It's especially is pleasant after one of our long icebound winters. Everything smells so fresh and new. It's the start of another wonderful life cycle. Best wishes.

Cal, I'd rather make a 500 yard groundhog shot than kill a B&C buck! Not nearly as much work!!
rootbeer, If you think it has changed since you were there, you cannot imagine the changes since I was there!!! That area with all the stores and Lowes and umteen restaurants on 460 across from 114(road to Radford) was the horticulture farm and research area when I was there!!! They traded that land for the Kentland farm over next to McCoy!!! Go figure!!! GHD
