What bullet in 30-06 blows most fur?

The 55gr do a good job at taking away fur. They have a wad so they will go down the barrel. I think that they are made by rem. I have not seen them in a while. My only question is why do you want to destroy the hide?

I do not use the fur.And i really hate that animal, and it must be in 2 pices after the shot. [Big Grin]

A good old 110 gr. Hornady Spire Point loaded hot will do an impressive job of exploding Br'er Fox.

You mean destroys the most fur or makes the smallest hole? A 220 Silvertip will blow an enormous hole in the off side. A 110 grain FMJ should do the oppopsite. I've only ever used 90 grain .243 FMJ's on game. Leaves a puncture wound you can't even see unless you're up close.
"...it must be in 2 pices(sic) after the shot..." Waste of time hunting if you don't take at least the hide. You might as well play golf.

Sunray, I tend to agree with you, but this IS the Varmint Hunting forum. Most people hunting varmints want to blow them to pieces, the more widely scattered the better. There's a varminting page somewhere by the "Seekers of the Red Mist," which is what they seek to turn varmints into.

It think it is smart to shoot it in small parts, because it is a good way to get some really good bait.and i get ca.30 dollers for one. And I should try the 110gr Hornady spire point. [Cool]

Anyone try the Hornady 110 grain V-Max in .30 caliber. Seems like that would do a number.

But is the 110 gr v-max as accurate as the 125 gr TNT bullet. [Confused]

110 grain spitzer bullets in .30s tend to be a bit iffy. They have very short bearing surfaces, and it's hard to get enough of the bullet seated in the case to hold it securely and properly aligned and still get fairly close to the rifling. Some rifles will shoot them very well, others won't. But they can be driven to very high velocities and perform explosively. Think of TWO 55 grain TNTs from a 22-250 hitting exactly together!

Have you tried Sierra's 135gr SoftPoint? It's designed for use in 30cal pistol so the expected operating velocity is well below what you might get in a rifle. et that going at top speed in your 06 and it should blow up good on contact.

Maybe a Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip would do the same. Please post results.

Speer 130gr hollowpoints loaded on the hot side are really devastating. A buddy of mine used one on a small blacktail buck one time. He won't do it again, I bet. [Wink]

I don't understand the animosity towards fox. [Frown] I've always found them a "not-too-bright" opponent and real suckers for a varmit call.

Anyway, as for explosive bullets...Does Speer still make that silly "Plinker?" It was a horrible thing to behold when it caught up with a varmit at /06 velocities.

Not a terribly accurate bullet, but good enough for varmits at reasonable range.

Another deadly combination I used to shoot now and then was the Flat Nose 150 gr 30/30 bullets out of my /06. Not pretty.

Pecos,

I forgot to make a disclaimer in my first post here: "I have no beef with foxes myself."

But, the 30/30 150gr Flatnose is an interesting idea. I'll have to research using that in a 300WinMag. Only real question is "how fast is too fast?" Don't want it vaporizing halfway to target. Thanks for the idea.

Sierra makes a pretty soft 125 FN HP that I've used in a .30 Herrett T/C that would take this idea one step further. That is, if you can keep the melted core in the cup long enough to make the connection . . . [Eek!]

While I don't shoot a 30-06, I do use a 308 for varmints. And I don't think you can do better than the 125 TNT or the 125 Nosler B.T. Either on of those bullets clocking around 3200 fps blows big holes in fur, and both are capable of sub .5 MOA accuracy. I have tried the 110 Sierra Varminter, the 110 Hornaday AMax, the 125 Sierra, and the 130 Hornaday, and while all have shot very well especially the 110 Sierra, and the 125 Sierra, non have shown the explosive expansion of the 125 TNT, or the 125 Nosler B.T.

If you want to blow bigger holes in varmints go up to the 300 WSM and push the 125 Nosler B.T. to 3550 fps. That has to seen to be believed......AWESOME. Don't use the 125 TNT in the 300 WSM, been there did that. The 125 TNT cant take it.

I think I should go up on the load and use 55 gr VV N-150 instead of 53 gr. Then it should do 3300 fps,the load i use now does 3150 fps,Should make a difference. But how fast can the TNT go before it blow up in the air. [Confused] It is said on the box (should not been pushed past 3100 fps)

Gonzo - There probably isn't a great lot of difference between explosive effects of any of the bullets between 100 - 125 grs from a 30/06...unless a bullet was built specifically NOT to explode. I know I've had devastating results on varmits with the 110 gr as well.

Don't know what would happen to 30/30 bullet from 300 Mag. Never tried it. [Confused] If the bullet will hold up, it wouldn't be pretty.

Used to have a target-barrelled '06, and used it on pr. dogs and high mtn. chucks. I've used a # of bullets, but i've got to agree with Craigster-- the 130 Speer was the most destructive. Just happened to notice you're using the TNT 125 gr. I didn't even know Speer made one in .30 cal. I betcha that'd be hard to beat.

EDVIN:

I have found that the 125 TNT will take up to 3400 fps with no problems. After that it is iffy. At 3500 fps they didn't make to the 100 yard target, at least from my rifle. I think if a rifle was built with a really slow twist the TNT would take more velocity. JMHO. The Nosler B.T. will take all you can give it out a 300 WSM regardless of twist rate.

Usually it's the other way around.

My vote is for the Sierra 110 gr. Hollow Point. This bullet is surprisingly accurate in the .30-06 and .308 (I've shot many different rifles with this bullet and it always has worked well) and its terminal performance on game borders on the Volcanic. Enjoy.

I'm relatively new to the varmit side of the '06 have used 130 Speers mostly very expolsive just didn't shoot as accurately as I would like-just got a bunch of Nosler 125 BT's today and they shoot very nice out of my Savage 110!! [Big Grin] Grouped 1.17" at a 100yd with a flyer .75" without. [Big Grin] I'm pushing them to 3118FPS with 55 grs of Varget nice load I could shoot all day.

Edvin--for realy giving the fur a hard time their is absolutley no question that the 125 TNT out of an 06 at 3200 is at the top of the heap-others will do good but there is nothing out there to really compete with this one. Just my humble opinion.......
