<Armed in Utah>Had one in a SS HB 243 win 1/8 twist, s/shot. Did not have much luck with it at all. Spent more time testing loads. The only bullet it would shoot was a 75 gr flat base hp Hornady. I went to Pac Nor, had them build me a 6.5x308 AI, 26" SS no taper 1.230" 1/8 twist. This is heavy yes, but a real shooter. Its on a s/shot Savage, with a Choate Varminter stock and 6x24 Elite 4200. 5 shots will punch a .50" @ 100 using 100 gr Noslers. SSS triggers work great though.

MrgunslingerI have 3 of the SSS barrels.
One in 17 Remington and will put 5 into one hole at 100 yds.
One in 6Br that has been shot 40 rounds so far and the best 5 shot group is 1/4 of a inch.
Winter has put this one on hold as it is to bad out to finish breaking it in.
I have another in 300win mag and it has put 5 shots inside of a inch at 450 yards.
These barrels shoot real well and clean very easy.
I would not hesitate to buy another one and Fred
at SSS is a good guy to do bussiness with.
But I have heard that Pac nor is good also but more expensive.
I have a Pac nor on a Remington and have had bad luck with it.

Mike in ReedleyThought I'd jump in here. I'm thinking of ordering a Sharp Shooter barrel in 6m/m AI and was wondering about the quality of their barrels. I have several of their triggers and have been very pleased with them all. I just installed one of their Fetherweight stocks and I'm also very pleased with it.

MrgunslingerRead the post above!!!!!!
They are good barrels and smithed very well.
I would brother have a OK barrel smithed buy a great smith then a great barrel smithed by a ok smith.
They are alot of great barrel makers out there but they are only as good as the gun smith that chambered them.
Fred at SSS knows what he is doing and he is the originator of the Savage replacement barrels.
Before that he built coustom remington rifles for compition use.
YOU CANT GO WRONG USING HIS PRODUCTS!!!!!

cummins cowboyhow much do these type of barrels run typically

MrgunslingerThe SSS barrels run $239 plus shipping.

cummins cowboyis this pretty much the typical cost of a replacement barrel. The other day i was thinking about how feasible it would be to buy a used
30-06 or 270 because they are a dime a dozen used and can be found for under 300 bucks and just put a new barrel on it for whatever caliber you like in my case something in .22 caliber since this seems much harder to find and way more expensive. heck i can buy a brand new model 70 30-06 at my wal-mart for 290 bucks. I wonder if this could be a cheaper ticket to a nice varmit rifle.

<Crow>I have a 22BR, a 17 Mach IV, a 6-284, and a 17 Rem on the way.
They are really nice barrels, very slick, well done, easy to clean, etc. Most of the barrels are $239, with the 17's running $20 more. If you want a sporter contour, add $35. Delivery is usually within 2 weeks or less. Here's a pic of a target shot with the 17 Mach 4 barrel on. Keep in mind that this is on a 110 long action and an unbedded POS factory synthetic stock. With a good Kindler or Hammett bullet, maybe I can do better......
I have also heard good things about the Pac-Nor's, but they are higher in cost and take longer to get. I can't imagine them shooting any better than what I have now.

Rem. 222Crow,
That's a great group for being shot out of a Douglas barrel. Some folks say that Douglas barrels are equivalent to ER Shaw barrels. I don't think so.

DutchI'd buy one from Fred in a heartbeat, if he would only buy a 35WSM reamer, turn it down to a sporter contour, and offer Chrome moly.
Unfortunately, he doesn't do any of the three, so Chris at Pac-nor got the business.... FWIW, Dutch.
