I was suprised to see this guy show up on my trail cam. I know what he's looking at. There's a mouse that has a hole under the feeder. It sticks its head out, grabs a grain of corn, and darts back in. I cooked a turkey today and took the neck and giblets and placed in camera range. Maybe get some more fox pictures tonight.

I just returned from a 6 day trip to Phoenix, Arizona. On my way down from Montana and just after I crossed into Arizona (I was travelling at night) in one long stretch of road I saw three different small Fox. They were most definitely Gray and they were Hunting along the edges of the pavement. These were the first Gray Fox I have seen.
I also got to see my first Road Runners! They were cool. No pics of them though as they were wary and sped off.

Growing up in NM I was used to seeing them often and miss them now. I have seen them as far east as Arkansas. I don't think I have even seen them as far north as northern NM.
Santa Fe ABQ and south.

Varmitguy, thanks for looking at the photos, glad you liked them. Also glad you asked what kind. I just assumed it was a red fox because there was some red on it. But after you asked, i looked for some information. It seems a red fox has a white tip on its tail and a gray fox has black running the whole top length and a black tip. So, yes, it was a gray fox.

About seeing three on your drive, that's pretty neat. Foxes are pretty elusive, i've never, ever seen one.

TC, nice roadrunner site. I've never seen a roadrunner either, some interesting species out west.

That is a gray for sure. Reds are RED! I keep saying I am going to get the trail camera, but worry about having hundreds of turkey pictures. Heck I can get turkey picturesin the front yard (there were 20 some odd this morning)
Sure is funn starting now as the toms start their strutting and fighting.

The small foxes that Varmint saw in AZ may well have been Kit foxes. Like small grays with BIG ears.

Yep, that's a gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) , and you've got lots of em' in WV. You've got red fox (Vulpes vulpes) there as well.

Maybe, but AZ has lots of gray fox as well and the kits are less common and are not as widespread as the grays.

TC, we have plenty turkeys, but so far none on film. If they do start tripping the camera, it can be set to take night pictures only.

I have hunted northeastern NM many times and have seen many roadrunners.

just for interests sake take a close look at a picture of a gray fox and a fox squirrel. they are also identical in coloring right down to the black stripe on the back.

Most red foxes are red,but there are many variations,silver is one and a cross fox is beautiful. at this time of the year they get pretty fades and are more coppery than red they also lose their value. but are still funto call in , I have pulled most of my traps and snares..P
