I say there are no "sage rats" in Washington state. In front of me is a print out from http://wdfw.wa.gov that show pics of Wash. ground squirrel, Townsend's ground squirrel and the Columbian ground squirrel. The Beldings are of the type commonly known as 'sage rats' in Oregon and unless they have a good breast stroke while swimming, can't cross the Columbia or Snake rivers and that Fish & Wildlife site is seeking to conserve ground squirrel populations due to the habitat they provide for other animals......comments please. r in s.

Check this out......All I'm saying that these squirrels in Wash. are not of the type we hunt down in Central Or. alfafa fields next month and there is a good chance a game law violation exists for Wash. hunters if they can't distinguish. Open to informed comments, please.

Ray I hope you don't mind. I thought this was good enough that it needed its own thread.

Why are only considering the Beldings Ground Squirrel as a Sage Rat? I always thought it was a generic term for ground squirrels in the Alfalfa.

Irregardless, there are a lot of Beldings in the Pendelton/Hermiston Area. Also throughout the Treasure Valley Area of Idaho. Why can't they cross the border into WA?

Call them what you want. Do your homework, and get after um. I don't know how anyone can shoot those cute little things.
The washington ground squirrel is the one that is off limits. There are fairly good populations around Spokane, and Euphrata. So make sure you take a good look at um. I wonder if they look the same as the others when they are inside out?
