chuckmusherTexas varmints
Does anyone out there know about possible prairie dog or other varmint hunting possibilities anywhere near Houston? My son and I are going to fly down from Va. the middle of Nov. for a family visit of a few days duration. Probably wouldn't work out- just looking at possibilities.

StonecreekSorry, the only prairie dogs in the state are almost 600 miles from Houston.
The only "varmint" hunting within reasonable driving distance of Houston might be for coyotes, but your better chance would be for feral hogs. Mid-November is deer season almost everywhere in the state, but all virtually all hunting is by lease and it is fairly expensive compared to most varmint hunting.
There might be some locals in the Houston area that could find you a place to shoot nutria. Those big water rats are the aquatic version of prairie dogs

ledvmAnd goose hunting is a good option as well. The Katy Prairie is world famous!

groundhog devastationBobby don't shoot shotguns worth a hoot!! He hands off DAMN NICE double barrels to other folks who have "put up their guns after limiting" and tells them to "Try this one!" I ain't sure he can sit still enough to hunt coyotes!! Darn boy is always thinking about the next move!! And picturing Bobby in a goose field or goose water is just darn near hilarious!! He couldn't get the mechanics out of his brain as to "windage to allow" or "holdover"!!! He and Nathan just might have to put up with "SIL(and Aunt) Susan" and endure their TX trip!!! LMAO!!!

Bob in TXAs stated above, you should be able to get a hog hunt in. The PD hunting is in west Texas and the Panhandle.

swampshooterThere's some respectable fishing within a reasonable drive of Houston.
velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

That sounds like a great alternative! What caliber and type of bullet do you like to use on them?

PsychobillyThere are loads of Public Hunting lands around Houston. Go to Texas Parks and Wildlife and look into it. It's a bit pricey for an out of state hunting license in Texas but you will have to have that to shoot anything in Texas, even varmints. ***read second bullet point***

Bob in TXYou don't need a Non-Resident Hunting License for what you are talking about. You can just get the #157 Non-Resident Five-Day Special Hunting License for $48.00. It will let you take PD's, predators (including cougars), hogs, javelina's, small game, and exotics.
