Rick RHunter puts together a pretty good tale. I didn't know he had a new book out, I'll look for it the next time I get to a book store.
Thanks for the heads up.

GeedubyaRick,
I don't know whether you've read Hunter's other books.
To my mind the 47th Samurai and Days of Thunder were not his best efforts
However, being a rifle loony and a fan of a certain country western singer of yesteryear, I certainly got a kick out of this story. Its probably out in hardback only. I get most new releases from our local library on audio cassette (free). I listened to it on audio cassette, unabridged.

I first discovered Stephen Hunter when I picked up a paperback copy of DIrty WHite Boys at a grocery store checkout. What an introduction! I have nearly all of Hunter's novels I think, enjoyed them all. I want to get An American Gunfight about the assassination attempt on Truman. I really enjoyed I, Sniper, but I'm surprised Hunter didn't get his butt sued off by Ted Turner. Of all The Swagger novels I thought 47th Samurai was the biggest stretch, probably the weakest one.

KedronI've enjoyed all the Stephen Hunter books I've picked up but I lump I Sniper in with 47th Samurai and Days of Thunder as being his weaker works. I especially like his books revolving around Earl Swagger like Hot Springs and Pale Horse Coming.

GeedubyaI'd say my three favorites are
1 Point of Impact
2 A time to Hunt
3 Dirty White Boys
I spend a lot of time driving. I enjoy listening to audio cassettes. Pure escapism and entertainment.
Being a certified guncrank and rifle looney, and being an old fart, I was able to relate to the "old goat" Swagger has become.
I also enjoyed the references to Jane Fonda, Ted Turner, Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Carlos Hathcock as well as the different sighting systems of Holland, BORS, etc.
I don't know how much time you spend behind a rifle/scope, and although I have never been in combat, I can relate to the aspect of losing oneself to the rifle. There is something sublime in shooting small groups with an accurate rifle with good glass and a sweet triger, be it at 100 or 300 yds.

GeedubyaRich,
what's it about?

Man, I have that book, it's a good story, the writing is not the most polished though. I would advise you to look for it in a used book store or borrow a copy from a friend. I ordered mine, I'm sure I'm on some kind of watch list for that! Ah well, I'm was probably on a bunch already...

+1 on the favorites list. I came across my dad's collection of Stephen Hunter books couldn't put them down. He warned me about DWBs since I was in my mid teens and he was right.
