I need a good sharpening tool for my pack. Any suggestions? I know a tormek won't fit and its probably a bit heavy.

you need something for a backpack right? I'd get a lansky type system with diamond hones then. Take it out of the box it will be rather small, only bring 1 rod. I'd get a diamond one because you don't need oil, water or dry is fine, so you don't have to cary oil or worry about it leaking.

Get a set of ceramic rods....the ONLY way to go, trust me! My wife accuses me of owning every sharpening system made, and either Lansky or Gatco make ceramic sharpeners in almost ANY configuration/size you want. I made BELIEVERS in elk and deer camps this year! I've owned the Lansky Diamond sharpeners and Lansky replaced them after my Buck and Puma knives wore the diamond grit off the stones in one sharpening. Lansky admitted that the adhesive wich holds the diamond dust on the stones is not permanent. You will never wear out ceramic, they are used dry and come in two grits. Ceramic will not create an edge, but will reliably restore a dull one!

The Spyderco Tri-angle sharpener will put a hair popping edge on your knife. Not too heavy either.

Are you planing on carrying a sharpening system to sharpen completely and repeatedly? That is a different assignment than starting with a sharp skinning knife and planing on just touching things up after you have the first deer skinned. For weeks in camp the triangle sharpener gets my vote. If you start out with a sharp knife and only need something to get you through the second and third elk, I personally would get a small plastic RADA Mfg sharpener. Puts a quick edge on, if not the finest edge you ever saw. I have put my last 55+ pound pack on. Good hunting. D
