Anybody shoot a .284 Win?
My son has a .284 Win in a Ruger M77 flatbolt that he got from my father who bought it new. We've found some good loads for it with 150 grain bullets and IMR-4350 and a few loads with IMR-4064 and 130 grain bullets.
What are you all shooting?

Apparently the .284 withered and died and I didn't even know it!

No one loads for this round anymore?

Just loaded up some yesterday. 57gr IMR 4350 with the 139 sst. Won't say it'll shoot but i'd like to think it will. 4350 and the 284 g hand in hand. you can also try RL19. might give a tad more velocity.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time.

Thanks lofter I was beginning to think the .284 was not in use anymore!
Keep me posted on how that load works out.

OK... Just so you won't feel lonely, I have a pre-64 Winchester M88 in 284. She's all origional and pretty much a 'Safe Queen", but I take it out to the range from time to time. If I were to pick one povder for it, it would be H4350.

I've got a Savage Model 99 in 284. Currently I've been trying Hornady 139 gr and Barnes 130 gr. With both I was using RL-15 but I think I'm going to try something else as I'm getting hard to extract brass with both even though I'm nowhere near max. With the Barnes, the velocity at which I was supposedly getting with the charge that was agreeable to my chamber, wasn't up to snuff with my 7x57 loads. Accuracy was suitable for hunting.

Ruger 77, 54 grains of 4350, 150 partition, 2.90 OAL, CCI 250 magnum primers.

Chrono at 2850, and has killed 2 elk and an antelope in the last 2 years. I certainly have nothing to complain about

It is the tang-safety model, but not a flat bolt. Has the 22-inch barrel. The basic original model 77.

Mine is an HS precision and I cant decide between these two loads:

140g accubond with 59g H4831SC = 2885fps

168g berger VLD with 55g RL 19 = 2775

Both are loaded way too long to fit the magazine however.

I just remembered about another load that worked well, and my old win model 88 really liked it too.

120g barnes TSX with 57g H4350 = 3000 fps

Uh....ya'll need to go over to 6mmBR and check out a guy named Ballard. If you go to precisionriflesales.com (Mebane, NC) then click on the link for "New F Class Open 1000 yard World Record Set"..this guy built the rifle. Thinking might just see a comeback of the .284 Win. Plus if I am not mistaken there are some loads he used to set this. I also know this guy Ballard is on YouTube with the rifle. Hope this helps.

It spawned a few factory rounds such as 450 bushmaster and 30 REM AR, I think its worth it. I own an old Winchester Model and love it.

Re-15 will grant 120X's to 3225fps and 140X's to 2925fps in a 24" 2.810" COAL 700 boltgun.

I realize that you are at the mercy of doing the best you can do...which of course does much to inflate the inherent humor.

Fairly priceless,when viewed in context!
