DrHenleyOld load...new bullet.
People have sworn by 59 grains of IMR-4350 behind a 150 grain bullet in 30-06 for decades. So the load itself is nothing new.
I never tried it because I had some bad experiences with 150 grain bullets about 35 years ago. I loaded 180 grain bullets, then switched to 165 grain bullets and kept shooting them up until year before last. I had an incident that convinced me of the need for bonded bullets.
With a stoutly constructed bonded bullet, you should be able to drop the bullet weight some and still get as much penetration as a heavier traditional bullet. So I decided to try some 150 grain Accubonds.
Hot Damn! That old standby load shoots like a house on fire with 150 grain Accubonds! With my 26" barrel I get better than 3000 fps and it is the best load I've ever had with any bullet.
The first shot in the field was on this big buck, which was a steep angled front quartering shot at 150 yards:
Bang, Flop!
Ohhhhhh yeaaaahhhhh!

The operative words are "steep angled front quartering shot." The bullet hit the spine at a shallow angle and plowed straight ahead through about 8 inches of bone.
I normally like an exit wound, but on a shot at that angle, it's asking too much of any normal deer load to penetrate the shoulder and the spine and still have a complete pass-through.
Maybe with a 410 grain bullet from a 45-70...
