Tough finding info on RL23. Anyone using it in their 270/280AI?

30.06kingAgreed, finding info is not easy. I saerched the net a lot to find anything I could.
Check about page 76 for data on 270 W loads with 150 gn bullets in the Alliant Guide below.. A few loads there with RL23. Might give you something to work on for your particular bullets.
A couple of years ago for my 270W I worked up load with RL23 shooting Hornady ELD-X 145 gn. This was in a Sako, 1:10 twist, 24 inch barrel, Remington brass, Federal 210 Primer, COAL 88.00 mm ( 3.464 inches ). The RL23 charge was 57.00 gns. It gives MV a bit under 3100 fps.
It shot well out to 300 yds but beyond that was erratic suggesting to me bullet stability issues.
I no longer use this load however as I worked up another, much better, with AR2209 ( H4350 ) and the same bullet for around 2940 fps, that shoots really well out to 400 yds.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

ZekeShikarI now use RL-23 in my 280 AI. It works like a freakin CHAMP in my 22-250 AI!!!
I just started tinkering with it in the 280 AI (over a year ago but at my age that's like yesterday) and it's showing promise with the 150 Nosler BT and AB 160.
I was using IMR 7977 but it's a bit too slow so case fill was 100%+. I got good ignition and great groups when I went to a 215 primer....but I'm running low on that powder and was told that IMR-Enduron powder will no longer be available.
Sorry, TMI

ZekeShikarPlus, all ReLoder/Alliant powders have been so scarce that unless you have some, don't try to use it because more than likely you won't find it.
I happen to find an 8 lbs keg a couple years ago so I snapped it up.
*I can get load data this weekend and share it to you on Monday

muygrandeI too bought an 8 lb a year or two back. Doesn't help much to waste it working up loads base
On H4831 SC WHICH I began but got into HOT LOADS QUICKLY.
Looking forward to seeing your
Load development. Thanks.

ZekeShikar280 AI RL-23 loads:
Your mileage may vary so precede with caution.
Hammer Hunter 143 gr with 57 grains of RL-23
Nosler 150 BT as high as 57.5 but that's warm.
140's as high as 59 grains.

muygrandeThanks. I am at 58.0 with 145barnes lrx and 60.0
With the 139 lrx. at 3.30
and 3.31 respectively. Fed 210
And new
Peterson brass. Was using nosler
But had some
Problems. So our loads are
Relative close.
26 January 2023, 23:01
ZekeShikarAh, Peterson brass along with ADG, is top shelf stuff and generally handles pressure much better before loose primer pockets rear their ugly head!
I'm still using Nolser for the 280AI and my 6.5x280AI (neck turned) and it's just barely fine compared to the better brass brands.
Yes, our loads are close but I need to convert over to better brass (and work back up the powder charge) next go 'round.
Thanks,
Zeke

cgbachMy .270 Winchester loves Re23 above all others. Usually I buy 8# jugs but I just wanted to see how it would work compared to my usual Re22 so I only bought 1#. I am hording what I have left and plan on getting a big jug when it becomes available again.
