45/70 Govt.220 grain is about as big as the bullet goes.
http://www.reloadammo.com/3006load.htmIf you're gonna load, you need to spring for the specified propellant.

Sako, so do I, but I think that the bullet is too long for an 06....I think it would be a good bullet for a 300 H & H....
I sure like the looks of a 300 H & H with 220 grain Round Noses on them...
and I don't think one can get enough H 4831 SC powder in an 06 case to overpressurize a load with it...200 grains with a stiff load of H 4831SC has given me velocity in excess of 2800 fps....
when I reported it, I sure got a lot of flack over it... but a few guys who worked up the loads were sort of surprised...
The Ballistician at Nosler was one guy who supported me, when others were busy flaming me over it...without trying it themselves... because I wasn't in any of their reload manuals.... they just ignored that factory H 4831SC loads, were giving pressures in the 45,000 PSI range....

BigBulletHere are my favorite heavy bullet loads for the '06;
200 gr Partitions, 55.5 gr H4350, 2650 fps
220 gr Woodleighs, 54.0 gr H4350, 2470 fps
220 gr Hornady, 54.0 IMR4831, 2475 fps
250 gr Barnes Solids, 50.5 gr IMR 4350, 2215 fps
265 gr Huffnail(sp?), 52.0 gr H4831SC, 2165 fps
Note; all in RP brass and CCI-200 primers. These are all at max or near max, so please proceed with caution and start 10% lower.
Good Shooting,

kududeMathias,
I don't know about the BAR, but generally, semi-automatic rifles should be fired with mid-weight, mid-power, mid-range powder combinations. They are not as flexible in their diet as bolt guns.
I would be very careful in shooting heavy bullet weight, high pressure loads which could damage a really fine rifle. Kudude
