8 x 57 js loads for old 98 Mausers.
In a post called "Rainy Day Rifle" I described how I came about discovering the loads that follow. In two military 98 Mausers, one from world war I and one from world war II and both having receiver sights with either the military front sight or a commercial front sight and with both having either a "fair" barrel or a "horrible" barrel, these rifles give three shot groups better than I can see: namely between l ans 2 MOA. The loads are:
38.4 IMR-4198 150 Speer Spitzer formed cases & CCI200
39.5 " " " "
39.0 " " R-P 8 1/2 120
39.9 " " " "

In rifles with good bores and utilizing scopes three different Mauser gave less than MOA as follows using again IMR-4198.

39.0 150 HDY Sp Pt W-W F-210 1/2 MOA 18 1/4" barrel
" " R-P " 3/4 " 23 "
41.0 " WW Super "2/3 " 23 3/4"
41.5 " " "3/4 " 23 3/4"

It seem that somewhere between 39.0 and 41.5 your Mauser might respond with a MOA load with a good or a bad barrel. This is not a powder typically listed in the manual for this cartridge but it did come out or a manual and shoots well in at least five different rifles with different barrel lengths, various cases, and various primers. It could give new life for one of the thousands of WW II rifles that have shown up in the U.S. in the last few years.

I appologize for the format that came out in the previous post. It seems the software printed it out differently than I had typed it. I'll know better next time.
