Which powder for .300 WSM?
I am helping a friend reload some rounds for his .300 WSM with 165 and 180 gr. bullets. What is your preference for powder for these bullet weights? The rounds will be used for Idaho Elk (180's) and Texas Whitetails (165's) If you have any recommendations on bullets I'd welcome those as well. Thanks!

I just started working with the .300 wsm this year, but I am having good results with IMR 4350 and 4831. I am working with a Win. model 70 and it seems to shoot well with everything tried, but It really likes a Sierra 180 gr. flat base Pro hunter. The first group was .600 in. and it is hovering around .750. I will need 3 or 4 more range trips to settle in on a load. Jim.

This is probably out of turn since I haven't loaded for this chambering myself but if I was starting from point zero, my first choice of a powder to work with would be VARGET! I have worked on and shot some of the WSM's but have some experience with their cousin the 300SAUM and VARGET in the 57-64 grain range with bullets from the 125-165 grain range have been pleasantly tested!!! Accurate and fast both! GHD

My factory win FWT 300wsm didn't shot worth a darn so had it rebarreled with a Broughton SS 5r 1/12 twist set up for 165 gr BT. My first powder of choice is R-19 and picked up some N165 and will try that and if it warms up alittle today. I wish I could find some N550. I plan on hunting elk and deer with the load I develope with the 165 gr plus shot lot of elk with a 30-338 set up for the 165 gr bullets. Haven't checked the velocity yet but will do that latter. When I had the factory barrel on I got pretty close to 3000fps with a 180gr bullet using H4831sc. I'm going to try Combined Technology bullets,Hornady and the Scirocco and see what happens. Well good luck, Tom

w/ R19 (70 grns) and 165 grn SSTs I usually get 3100 fps and as far as groups, usually the first two make one hole and the third is real close.

Good Luck!

W760, or a reasonably close relative, is the powder of choice for factory loads, and, has worked pretty well for me, at least with 165 grain Hdy BTSP's. Its twin, H414, should perform equally well, but, my particular lot hasn't.

Be sure to start at the recommended starting loads. Load data I've seen out there can really vary.

BTW - the standard WLR primer seems to give best results.

OOPS!! Almost forgot - check here http://www.shortmags.org/shortmags/forum/default.asp for some more data.
