Baddwufanyone using Trail Boss powder
Looking for light loads in 22 hornet, 25-20 and 223 with Trail Boss, cast bullets maybe 1,000 fps?

sirwilliamI have tried using it in 30-30 with 170gr cast to get subsonic loads.4.5-5.0grs will give you just over 800 fps, got some 250gr Cast 375 Winchester loads with 6.4grs loaded up but have not got to the range with them yet. 45-70 will be the next I will try with some 405 cast. Try doing a search I thought someone did some reloading and posted it.

Tyler KempSirwilliam please post your 45-70 results or pm them to me. I am interested in this powder, especially with "extra-lite" loads, say 300 grain cast around 750 fps? Or maybe round ball?

DaManDoes anybody know the how much Trail Boss weighs per cc?

seafire2Don, I bought a container of it...
It had 9 ounces and the contain was dead full...
really bulky powder...
I contacted Hodgdon and their only loading instructions were
1. don't compress you load
2. the prefer it up to the cases shoulder, regardless of caliber...
I have tried some in the 223, 30/30, 444, 30/06, 8 x 57 and 243...
Seafire Jr shot some in the 30/30 and the 444, and after he pulled thr trigger, he looked at me and said " is that it" referring to the lack of recoil...
I really like this powder....
I think the 06 held only about 18 grains of this and it was full...
the 30/30 held about 11 or 12...
the 223, held about 8 grains of it..
MV with about a "full case" is going to be in the 100 to 1200 fps range...
the powder looks like oatmeal, and is about that fluffy...

DaManSeafire, I got the same story in every caliber and bullet weight combo I asked about.
"Fill case up (with bullet seated) but DO NOT COMPRESS. This is the 100% load.
Reduce 30% for starting load."
They didn't tell me what the bulk density was.... but with a little research I found that it was 5.0 gr./cc.
That's some BULKY stuff!
Blue Dot is 11.6 gr./cc.
Unique is 9.2 gr./cc.
So I have two questions for you......
1. How was the accuracy with Trail Boss?
2. Are you going to give up Blue Dot for use in reduced loads?

seafire2And the answer to those two questions are...
1. The accuracy was pretty decent as far as I was concerned out of what I have shot it out of so far... but my main intension for it was teaching kids to handload and then letting them shoot it...
It will also be good for places you don't want a fool power kaboom in the neighborhood..
2.. Am I going to give up Blue Dot??/

Not on your life!!!!
