May become my favorite .250 Savage varmint load
Note - the following should only be used in firearms appropriate to loads in the 55,000-60,000 psi range, and only if you "start low and work up slow" with no pressure signs.

87 grain Speer TNT
36.5 grains RL15
Winchester WLR primer
Annealed, necked-up Winchester 22-250 brass

I have 2, witnessed sub-inch 3-shot 100-yard groups from my 1970's vintage Savage M99A. In the 20-inch barrel it chronos right at 3,000 fps.

I have not run the brass through multiple firings yet to see if bolt spring will cause incipient case head stretch, but I will watch for it as the M99 has a reputation for same.

Have to admit I haven't tried 87 speers but, I have 4 250S's, 3 of which are 1899's, & they all shoot best with 87grn Sierra's & Imr 4895 or Imr 4064. Acc edge goes to 4895 while veloc goes to 4064. Another, while trying to find a deer load I found best accuracy with 100 partitions. You would think 100 Sierra's would shoot as well as 87s seeing as front bullet profile is same but all my .250s said no thanks!!

I'll be accuracy testing 100 Hornadys and 85 grain Barnes-X bullets for my deer load this year.

Old post but I am new.lol..

I have 250-3000 sav model 99 going back to 1915..They will work with most powders well..
my twist are 1-14 ..

best bullet for me was 87 gr Speer .Worst was hornadys for some reason they will not stablize well for me..

I like #3031 powder but 4064/4895/4023 all work well...

87 gr bullet knocks deer down better than 100 gr hunters in depression that shot 100s of deer told me they were my 9 uncles..

Some folks squeal about the use of the 250-3000 on big game..As far as I can tell and Ive used it way more than most, if you keep the range under 250 yards it kills both deer and elk with aplomb..Most all 99s will shoot great with a little tender loving care at the handloading bench..Many right out of the box..I have three that are incredible, so they are keepers..

My present 99 is a 1929 take down in 250-3000, and it will shoot under an inch with every load I've tried and that is many, and it will shoot 5 shot groups or more..Its the most accurate rifle Ive ever owned and that is amazing..Drop by and try it out anytime, but its not for sale.

One of my favorite varmint or Deer loads is the 90 gr. HP GameKing by Sierra under 39.5 grs. of H414..it seems to work on about anything up to big Mule deer size..

I have not used the 250 on elk in many years now, Im a big boy these days and use big boy calibers on elk and larger animals, but the results havn't changed much other than I now shoot considerably further..
