Why IMR4046 instead of 4895
In many of your favorite .308 loads I read about IMR 4046 but hardly ever about IMR 4895.

I was planning on trying some loads with 4895 as it seems to deliver the best pressure/velocity ratio in the .308 Win. according to QuickLoad.

But now I'm not so sure any longer.

Any special reason why you guys use 4046 instead of 4895?

I think you have your numbers transposed.
I believe you are talking about IMR 4064 powder, not 4046.

Anyway, My Hornady manual list both IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 powder for the 308 for all but the heaviest of bullets.

Both 4064 and 4895 are excellent powders for the
308 Winchester. When I was shooting High Power with a 308 I always used 4895, but other guys used
4064 with equal success. Now-a-days we have 20
powders that work just as good.

I actually did mix up the numbers, sorry. Anyway, I take it from your replies that 4895 is well worth a try. Thanx.

Absolutely.

It's a good powder for the 308, as stated above.

imr 4064 always produced accurate loads for me with the 168gr sierra's.
As did H380

h 380 groups were very consistent with 5 shot 3/4" groups at 100yrs..

For target loads, one grain more of IMR 4064 will give the same velocity as a charge of IMR 4895.

IMR 4895 is shorter cut and throws better in progressive machines. And that is what I use, though currently I am using up the last of my IMR 4064 in 308. What 41.0 grains IMR 4895 does with a 168SMK, so does 42.0 grains IMR 4064. My short range (200 yard) load is 39.0 grains IMR 4895 168 SMK. Shoots great. Shot a good number of cleans with a bolt gun.

Both are great for 308s. It comes down to what shoots better in your rifle.
