Wendell Reich458 Win Mag
I did a search here, but came up with very few posts on this forum, so, let's try again.
What is your favorite 458 Win Mag load?

Wendell ReichLooking for info on what most consider to be the best powders. I know YMMV, but there is usually a general consensus on what powders top the list.

congomikeI had my first 458 built back in 1974, at the ripe old age of 17. It was a Federal Arms barreled action, $119.00 if I remember correctly, the gunsmith that worked at the shop I worked at, donated an old Interarms(?) stock, and did the sights, old Remington 700, the bedding and the cross bolts. I searched for different loads and using my trusty Lyman 45th edition, settled on 3031. I have used it ever since and had good results. I always shot 500 gr. jacketed bullets, usually Hornady, Remington or Winchester. CCI large rifle magnum primers. Played around with a few other powders, but they did not improve, at least for me, on the use of 3031. This has been the case in the several 458's I have owned. Don't shoot them a lot anymore due to shoulder injury. I don't remember the exact load, but think it was in the neighborhood of 69 to 72 grains. It was a compressed load, but never gave me any problems.

Walter ProciukPowders that work well in a .223 Remington will work well with heavy bullet loads in the 458 Winchester. AA 2230, Ramshot Exterminator (the same powder), Hodgdon Benchmark, H 335, and Phil Shoemaker's IMR 3031.
I use a Lee factory crimp die to crimp and only trim 5 thousandths in order to maximize crimp strength.

Scott KingDoc Lane put me on to AA2230.
Kerpow. Accurate and deadly. I use Barnes TSX. Given my experience is see no need to test further.
