I appreciate your pain. I don't have a torn rotator cuff, but on the range I'm a complete wuss. If I'm doing load development I use a lead sled with 35 lbs on it. My 500 Jeffery still lifts the whole thing off the bench. I have a PAST recoil pad sewn into my shooting vest and have Pachmayer Decelerator with a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad over it. When I hunt, just a T-Shirt and the Pachmayer recoil pad, don't notice the recoil then at all.
Yep,
Chemical degradation over time must be the main reason for pad rot. Akin to dry rot of automobile tires.
Some rubbers are more stable than others.
Pachmayr seems to be good as it gets BMHE.

AtkinsonGive me a Silvers or a steel butt plate, if I need more I use a shoulder rig..but so far havn't had to resort to that..On the bench Ive been known to use a towel or whatever..For hunting I never feel shoulder recoil or suffer from it...Noise bothers me, recoil to the cheek bothers me, but all those issues can easily be addressed..

dgr416I every thing standing off the bench read this from Elmer Keith some where .I put a milk crate with a 60 pound bull bag on top of it .I use two past pads with my 416 rem mag and 338 win mag .I push with the left hand on the forend and let the right one recoil like Elmer said .My limit with this torn rotator cuff is the 416 rem mag .I tried a 470 capstick in a model 70 Winchester never again .That thing had broken three stocks and no scope stayed on it .I like for shooting to be fun not hurt .I shot my 416-with reduced loads 1$6 times in a day for fun with 350 Speer mag tips at 2400 fps .We shot waterjugs and other targets lots of fun .
