So I am heading for the Caprivi in a week & just had to know where my 404jeff was shooting out to 300yds. I don't anticipate shooting that far but still nice to know. My 380grNFs @ 2250fps sighted dead on @ 100, drop 23" @ 300 @ 9" drift in a 12-15mph crosswind. The benched group was just over 4" so I am thrilled w/ that. The rifle is shooting 2" groups off the sticks @ 100yds, I'm ready.

As best I recall the only instant kill I ever got on a buffalo was with a 380 gr. Northfork in my 416 Rem or 404 Jefferys (?) at about 250 yards or so. My PH, A.J. Van Heerden named that bull the "teapot bull", said he just tipped over like a teapot on his nose dead.

The .404 is pretty flat shooting and if one has gone to the trouble to know his rifles actual trajectory the 300 yard shots are pretty easy under proper circumstances. I have shot plainsgame and elk at 300 yards with both the .416, 375 and 404, and even made about a 250 yard shot with a 450-400 by holding about two feet over a big Kudus back and dropped one in him..

This trajectory thing is a bit over rated as most all the simulair calibers are pretty close within reason, in other words the difference in trajectory between say an 06 and a 300 Wby is much less than a lot of folks might think it is...

People tell me the 458 is only good for 100 yards [ Bull] the first 3 deer I ever head shot were all shot @ over 100 yards and all were shot with 3 different 458 s,, 2 with express sights .. The biggest challenge is knowing the correct distance to target ...

I completely agree with the trajectory thing. I hear all the time that the .375 H&H is pretty weak out to 300 yards. I have handloads worked up with 270 grain TSX bullets and Reloader 15 that will shove off at a little over 2800 fps and I can see no difference between it and my .338 Win with 225 grain TSX bullets loaded with the same powder. This is a great 300 to 350 yard load as far as I'm concerned. I feel certain that a .404 could hit very well out to 300 yards with the right components and it will do some incredible damage to whatever you hit with it.
