HonkeyChas Osborn 450-400
I am doing some research for a friend who is looking at a Chas Osborn double, It is a beautifull gun in great shape 90%. The seller is asking $8500. I have been unable to find any for sale anywhere to compare the price. Also it is chambered in 450-400. Is this 450 nitro express?
Any info is greatly appreciated.

new_guyHonkey, the 450 Nitro and the 450/400 are not the same cartridge. Furthermore, the 450/400 was available in 2 different lengths ( 3" and 3&1/4" ).
The Charles Osborne guns i've seen were mostly box-locks, but i've seen a sidelock by osborne. Seems that they had london addresses, but were probably made in Birmingham. Check the proofs for more details there.
They didn't make a lot of "Best" guns, i.e. Boss, H&H, etc... but they made some damn good guns.
I'd think that if the condition were good, it hadn't been monkey'd with, and the bores were good... that $8500 would be a good price for an english made double in a very good caliber.
Condition, Condition and Condition are the only 3 factors to consider when buying a used gun (especially a DR.)
He should have it looked over by someone that knows them, i.e.: JJ at Champlins before he commits to the deal or within his inspection period.
Bores, Bores, Both Bores.
Most of the rest can be fixed at a resonable rate. Barrels on the other hand get expensive real quick!
I believe the Osborne in question is a 3 1/4. I think we will all know by Saturday evening.

Frank MartinezI know the Bank Draft was mailed for the one I am purchasing and The Members of this Board, like Rusty and Mark and Ernest and Ray and others have more information about these grand old rifles than you will find anywhere else around.
