300 gr .416
I see that Barnes is now offering the .416 in a 300 gr bullet, but doesn't list any loading data for it in their new book. Does anyone have any experience with this weight bullet? Might it approach 3000 fps? What kind of longer range application might this bullet have? Elk, plains game, etc? Thanks for your insights. Gary

I shoot resized 429 300 gr bullets in my 416 taylor at 2650. A 300 gr X bullet should work well. the 416 rem or bigger well do better. I figure about 10 yards for every 100 fps.

But only up to a certain point once you hit enough vel to get where you need want you have it.

I've shot the 300 grain Barnes in a .416 Rigby with good results. Pushed them to 2900 fps with H450 (no longer available) with good results on a trip to Zimbabwe. Only recovered one bullet, that being from a buffalo. Shot behind the shoulder at about thirty-five yards and recovered from the off side just under the skin. All of the petals were gone and the recovered portion looked like a pencil eraser. I shot a croc and plains game with this load with all one-shot kills. This bullet seemed to expand very promptly at this velocity. Of course, what you'd be shooting is the equivalent of a .378 Weatherby. Very accurate bullet in the one rifle that I've shot them in.

I miss the Barnes 325 gr X bullet.I got 2800 fps out of my 24" barreled model 70 .Its very accurate and would be awesome in the new 416 Ruger.I hope I scratch together enough to build my mark I 77 416 Ruger. Its gettingf harder to even find the Barnes 300 gr bullets.I gotta scratch up some more 325 gr .416 bullets.

Check my avatar , you can see what a 300 gr X bullet is good for ,,, Actually it is as good a 416 bullet as anything ,but people just won,t let go of their lead ... They work excellently on brown bear ..............If I were lion hunting it would be my preferred load and really the only thing I would want in my 416 Rem mag .... With RL 15 I get 2900 fps , and with H4895 I run into pressure before I get there but 2850 fps is fine ,and that is with book loads ....Doesn,t kick to bad either .....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Used the 300 X in my first .416. A custom Sako back in '90, took one Elk with it. It worked perfectly breaking both shoulders. Believe it or not I recovered it under the hide on the off side. Pedals were mostly gone and it wieghed 288 grs. 91 grs. Rel 15 for 2900+ fps.
