Think this would be worth a darn as a DG rifle?

jackgutharyThink this would be worth a darn as a DG rifle?
I have seen a couple of these kits before on various auction websites, and had always wondered about their usefulness as a DG setup.
If they are decent, then I may get ahold of one for a Winter project.
Looks good on paper, anyway!

JudgeGA fellow who post on the African Hunting forum runs the company. I think you get what you pay for... a not so fancy gun, that works (if you do your part!).

the_captainI think this is a good deal. You don't end up with a real showpiece of a rifle, but I have built up a similar deal that works VERY well and is tough as nails. A rifle you don't mind carrying out in the dirt and rain, esp if you finish it right. All the hard work is done and no special tools should be needed. All the real 'gunsmithing' stuff is done: barreling, magazine and feed mods, etc. Basically, you just have to assemble the pieces and drop it in the stock. Add whatever scope you like and go shoot. I would guess it's an afternoon of fiddling to get it all together and working. Plus, they made a great choice of calibers.

jackgutharyAppreciate the responses gentlemen, looks like this may be worth a try.
As mentioned, it won't be the type of rifle that you hang on the wall in your trophy room, but finish it with Dura Coat, or a similar product, and it would make an excellent big bore to take afield on those days (rain, snow, etc.) when it is best to leave the "nice" guns at home in the gun cabinet.
I think it'll be a fun project, and I will get a new gun out of the deal, so it is a win win

jetdrvrCoat it with Robar's NP3 and press on...

Big Bore Boar HunterAsk for references, see what owners say, I doubt you will be able to return it once you start work on it.

pinotguyIIRC, this is the set-up that Russ Gould advertises. The basic kit seems good and the end result could be a nice DG rifle. To me, it depends on how much work you're willing to either pay for or put in yourself.

Biebs http://bigfivehq.com/This is Russ' website. He gets some unusual rifles at good prices, as well as ammo, dies, cases, etc.

dean119What is required to install that timney trigger?
I'm looking for a winter project and a 416 taylor is something I've been interested in.
Thanks

jstevensAnyone with basic mechanical skills can install a Timney trigger. They are easy, just have to get the one for whatever kind of safety you're going to use.

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}From the chamberings offered these must be standard length actions used. I'd go with the 458 Win Mag and if the desire for more power was an issue, the 458 AccRel could possibly remedy any power concerns. Could be a chamber reaming away.
