375 H&H ammo variance

I am shooting some 375 H&H - getting ready for Burkina in 9 days.

The gun is a cz 375 H&H customized by Ahr - love the gun. My only hunting rifle.

The gun is sighted in 1.5 high at 100 meters with federal premium safari cape shock 300 grain swift a-frames.

Shooting at the gong with a-frames - few rounds as i don't to burn my ammo. 15 inch gong - 125 meters.

The federal swift, federal 270 grain soft, prvi 300 grain - all shooting well. Can hit the gong off hand.

Tried remington 270 grain soft point off bench with rest - 5 rounds. Not one on the gong - looks likes it shooting 4-6 feet to the left.

Switched back to federal a-frame back on gong.

Why is there so much variation on remingtons ? Is this normal when you switch any ammo to have so much variance ? I dont reload.

Problem is remington is the only practice ammo i have.

In one of my rifles Federal 375 H&H 300 TSX shoots 10-12" low compared to Barnes Vor-TX 300 TSX. The interesting part is that they both chronograph at nearly the same velocity. I would never count on two different factory loads from the same manufacturer shooting to the same POI let alone two different brands. They may but they may not.

Mike,
It's not unusual for different types or brands of ammo to have a completely different point of impact. My suggestion would be to count the clicks when you sight the rifle in for your practice ammo and practice all you want. When you are done, put the windage clicks back to where it was. You're going to shoot a test shot to see how close you are, make the adjustment and then do the final sight in, in Burkino. Just make sure you count the number that you moved it from.

I don't want to play around with the sighting off the scope - its shooting perfect for a-frame.

I am just going to have to dig thru my ammo and find something other than remington. Glad i did not order an remington a-frames.

Just surprised at the variance in point of impact across different ammo.

I plan to shoot around 100 rounds over the next week and have shot around 50 already.

Should i clean the barrel with solvent ect or just run a bore snake if its shooting well.

If you plan on shooting a lot of rounds, I would clean with solvent. A bore snake is for maintaining the sight-in in the field. Before flying I would get a synthetic preservative/oil for the trip. This is dry season in the sub-sahara so you won't need to worry about humidity and rust, but an airplane can play tricks.

While I agree many rifles will shoot different ammo to different POI...I have NEVER seen a normal rifle be off 4-6 feet with different ammo period...much less types that are similar. Even if you said 12"...I would have thought extreme but with in limits of expectation....but NOT 4-6 feet! I would have gunsmith shoot it with both and then check it out before going to Africa.
