Two of my big bores, a 378 wby and a 375 RUM, have removable muzzle brakes. Is capping the threaded portion of the barrel required when shooting after removing the brake? If so, where does one get the caps?

The caps are to protect the threads and/or give a finished look to the barrel. Whoever made the brakes should be able to make caps.

its a good idea to protect the threads. a threaded sleve can be made from bbl steel or delrin. you do not have to have it but if you booger the threads its gonna suck and get expensive. if you just want to try the rifle with out brake 4 or 5 wraps of electric tape or shrink tube makes a good temporary

You don't have to put a THREAD PROTECTOR over the threads, but if you hit them on something they can be easily damaged. Then you might not be able to put your brake back on. What size are the threads? I make thread protectors out of scrap aluminum.-Rob

If it is only the external threads which need protecting, I think I may be able to fashion something suitable especially since appearance is not high on my requirements.
