Bore cleaner?
Guys,

I've used Shooter's Choice for years ...have been happy with it. Last pint is about empty. Will need to order more soon.

Need to order stuff from Midway and from Cabela's but neither of them carries pints of Shooter's Choice.

You folks find anything you like better? Butch's? Hoppe's?

Thanks,

Weeeellll, if you can find some, buy some ammonium hydroxide in bulk and dilute to 10%. Mix with some Palmolive. Very inexpensive. This is if you still have some industry contacts or a VW&R close by.

Or, you can buy commercial grade ammonia preparations that are running maybe 7-8% and use that.

I have found that Ed's Red works wonderfully and it is true the claims that the copper comes out easier. Besides, I used turpentine so it would smell really good. Also, use the anhydrous lanolin you can order at Freddies, about $5.75 for a one pound tub. Really does the trick.

Someone else who doesn't know about Wipe-Out? The best thing since sliced bread!

I have been using Wipe-out. So easy I feel guilty about cleaning my guns. Still run some sweats through the bore just to see if it realy works. Came back from the range yesterday and it took maybe 15 min to clean my gun!

Ditto. Sure worked on cleaning up a .375 I was using. Best thing I have found for getting out the copper fouling from the Barnes X bullets.

WyoJoe,
I think I see a trend developing here ... Wipe-Out will be the winner when the vote is tallied. I have tried all the rest. Clearly Wipe-out is the best. I used to procrastinate because of the drudgery. Now a rifle never goes overnight without cleaning, because Wipe-Out lets me go do something else while I am getting my bore purified.

After you get it clean the first time, of what the other bore cleaners left behind, one or two 20 minute soaks with Wipe-Out (patch dry between soaks) will have the bore spotless again after each shooting session.

After the Wipe-Out has been patched out, I give it a spray with gun scrubber to rinse, patch it dry, and run a patch with Break-Free CLP down the bore and I am done.

Life is good!

When I was new to shooting the Barnes X I was not aware that you needed to clean out the copper fouling pretty often. I shot more rounds in the .375 with them than I should have. I am real pleased with how it got the copper out.

Mike,

We stock and use three solvents for all of our guns. Wipe out is highly reccomended, Forrest is the european version. We also use Pro Shot copper solvent with good results along with their one step cleaner. The nice part is they are easy to transport commercially so the price comes down. They work better than some of the petroleum based stuff.

Wipe Out may be nice but we use what we can get out in the Bush.

I really like Butch's Bore Shine followed up with Kroil.

Wipe out for me......

I didn't like Forrests, too weak..

Butches Boreshine rates right up there with cold water and coors beer for cleaning guns..Its the Kroil that works...

Barnes cleaner works good, hell it should they produce the worst fouling bullets in the world, so they must know what works....

Kroil and JB is good stuff...

Then my old favorite...1 quart of 25% Amonia (Druggest) mixed with a cup of Hydrogen Peroxide and a copper jacketed bullet tossed in...Called Blue Goop by the old time bench resters...Be sure and wipe it dry and oil profusly or when you return the barrel will be gone!! [Wink] Don't leave it barrel more that 15 minutes...

You have to give credit to whoever (or is it whomever) came up with the idea for Wipe Out. No comparison, it works great.

Of course, being the tight-ass that I am, I use plain old monoethynolamine, which is what is in Wipe Out. The ammonium ion is what is eating up the brass and copper.

It doesn't work as fast but it is dirt cheap.

Will,

My friend you have just set me back ions, what the hell is that darn stuff and where do I get some? Can you drink it? or what? [Confused] [Big Grin]

Ray,

It may not be worth screwing with, but some chemical suppliers sell it. It goes in some cleaners. Even though Wipe Out works a lot faster, dropping $10 a can seems a little much, since I have an alternative.

It has the consistency of liquid dishwashing detergent. I had to buy a gallon (probably a lifetime supply) for about $35. It is caustic so you need to use latex gloves.

I'd send you some but it needs a DOT sticker, hazardous chemical labels, etc., etc.

There is also DEA (diethynolamine) which doesn't work for poop. Make sure it is MEA.

Thanks Will but don't send it, I know where I can get a jar of it locally....I appreciate the thought however....I'll give it a try.
