404 question
What should one expect to pay for a 404 jeffery rifle based on a mauser(not cz or new)action? Sorry if this seems like a rookie question; I am!

Gary,

To answer that you would have to provide more information. For example, a VZ24 action that someone tried to turn into a .404J in their gargage would be at one end. An Oberndorf .404J would be something altogether different. Price range would be thousands of dollars apart.

As I understand it, a 404 can be built on a standard mauser action. This is what I am thinking about. I am sure that I couldn't afford an original mauser 404.

Gary,
Call Walt Sherman at 850 878 9563. He'll build you one for more than you want to spend, but less than you'll get one any where else. It will be a working rifle that is reliable, accurate, ready to hunt, and you won't be afraid to drag it through the mud, the blood and the beer. Kudude

My custom made 404 Jefferys made on a Montana Long Action, Lothar-Walther USA barrel, NECG sights, Watts Walnut Black Walnut stock blank, came to around $4,000.00 each.

Metal work by Tip Burns. Engraving by Roger Kehr. Stock work by John Valicek. When I finally got the parts to Tip's place the project took 14 months and that included a trip to Roger's for the engraving.

You can build a 404 on a Mauser with some extensive action work. Cost is dependant on what you want on it...Contact Dennis Olson in Plains MT.
