Light bullets for .458
Any opinions out there on which light bullets are good for 458Winmag loads, not light 45/70 loads. Ive been thinking about the 350gn Hornady interlock and 250-300gn Barnes for use on pigs . Any other good choices out there?

cr500 I use the Hornady 350RN in my 450 No2 at @ 2300fps. I have killed several deer and pigs with it [a couble of coyotes too [Big Grin] ]. It performs extremely well. Federal used to load a 350gr. at around this velocity in the 458. I would not be afraid to use this load on Elk or Moose.

CR 500 if your just whopping pigs etc. Give Rebel Sport in QLD. a ring and order some Rem 405 gr soft points for $45 per 100. There for 45/70's but they would splat real good at .458 winnie speeds [Big Grin]

I carried a .458 Win. as a backup gun for my wild boar guide service for years. I tried a bunch of bullets but had the best luck with the 350 Barnes. In the 6 years I carried it I never recovered a single bullet! They expanded and caused a great wound channel but would exit from ANY angle.
The 350 Horn. was a little fragile at those velocities (IMHO) and the various 300gr. HP's were worthless on anything except ground squirrels and jack rabbits.

I like the post about the 350 barnes.

My 458 shoots them at 2540 fps but I havent shot any game with them yet.

The 350gr.X is a great alternative to the traditional 500grainers. I've shot both moose and caribou with them with complete satisfaction. They can easily be driven to 2500fps and in my rifle they give MOA accuracy.

I used a 350 gr. Hornady in my 458 Lott last year for a zebra. The recovered bullet showed impressive expansion.

cr500,

Why not considering the Honardy 300 gr HP.

I think it will be enough with a great velocity for pigs.

TJC do you know the approx. velocity of that 350 Hornady, and how far away was the Zebra. Where did you hit him and how did he react to the shot. The biggest thing I have shot with the 350gr. Hornady so far is a few wild pigs in the 250lb. range. The reason I ask is that the 350 Hornady does @2330 fps out of my 450 No2 double, and hits spot on with the sights. I was thinking of taking some of them to Africa for plains game that I might encounter while carrying the 450 No2,ie. after a [hopefully successful] stalk of one of the Big Ones.
