<redleg155>Original 404 Jeff load?
What was the original cordite charge in grains for the 404?
Thanks - redleg

My sources show:
With the 400grain bullet it was 60grains of Cordite, for a velocity of 2125fps.
With the 300grain bullet it was 70grains of Cordite, for a velocity of 2625fps.

Their were two loads for the 400 grain bullet. 60 grains of old pattern Cordite at 2125 or 60 grains of Flat Strip HV Cordite at 2400fps.
The Flat Strip was said to shoot at lower pressures than the Original Cordite but Jeffery recommended only solids be used in the 2400 fps load. This was because of bullet failure at the higher velocity with the soft points of the day.

AtkinsonI shot up about 25 of those flat strip HV Cordite solids and they chronographed 2419 FPS with 26" barrels....Also shot a Buff with one and it zinged right through him broadside. Guy gave them to me but wouldn't give me the box?? or didn't have it, don't recall...otherwise I would have saved them...the brass wasn't very good, probably old...that was a long time back and it had very little value then but was a windfall to me...
