new 375
I am planning my first trip to africa and want to get a 375 H&H. Is the cz550 a good rifle for the money or should I spend more to get a better rifle? I have seen the cz and liked it but never shot it. I have never owned anythjing bigger than a 300 wby. I am on a fixed budget but probably could swing upto a grand. Also how do you feel about cabelas scopes the alaskan guide series?

You will find the CZ .375 a lot of rifle for the money. If you have a .300 Whby that rifle with some 180-200 grain Noslers Partitions will cover your plains game hunt. If you want to hunt buffalo you'll need the .375.

The CZ is a well made rifle that will serve you and your grandchildren well!

The CZ'a are nice rifles for the money. The Win. M70 would be my choice though & pass on the Cabela's scopes & go Leupold. A 2.5 compact or the VII 1x4 are affordable. Life time warranty & a great scope for the money. Check e-bay for some good deals on scopes.

I have a cz .375 with 1-4 VX 11 and I really like it, I even like the hogs back. [Eek!]

Travis,

I have a BRNO M602 in .375 H&H which is the CZ 550 in a previous life. The Chap Zed is the best rifle you can get for the $.

I don't know anything about the Cabelas scopes, but Cabelas has the best warranty service I have found. They will fix whatever is wrong in whatever you buy from them.

With that said I don't know if I would want to be the pioneer on the scope unless I could find out who makes these scopes for Cabelas. Leupold makes a lot of things under contract, for example they did the assembly on the Lieca scopes.

Ditto to what PC said. I have the same gun, same scope and also like the factory stock.

I have a really nice old circa 1930 Fabrique Nationale 375 thats for sale, I will send you an email...I believe it is 100% better than any new factory rifle on the market today..Maybe it is something you can use..it won't need tweeking and its foolproof...

DR scott,

the cz's are absoulutely awsome value, I wish I could afford a heap more of them !!

The 1-4 scope is a ripper as well great field of view on 1x, and 4x is plenty at the top end for the .375 IMHO.

How much are the new model 70 375's? I think the CZ here in the southeast can be had for about 600. I think I paid about that for my mod 70 a few years back. Both are good guns but need a bit of tricking out to be ready to go IMHO. I have one of each. I like the safety better on the mod 70. If Ray's gun fits your budget and has been tricked out already!!! You are way ahead. Good hunting. "D"

I can only recommend what I KNOW and what I know are Model 70s. My Super Express groups well under .5", yes, I said .5". As fara s the scope is concerned, go with a Leupold. Most other scopes don't have the requisite eye relief and as far as durability, the middle of the African Bush is not the place for a "warranty." You get what you pay for. Get the Leupold 1.75X6 (E) and you won't be sorry. jorge
