Question on the .375 H&H
I figured I would ask on this forum because this is where most of the .375 users congregate. I am thinking of trying the Barnes 270 gr. TSX this year and was looking for some info. Who here has tried this bullet and what is the best powder to start with?

In the lighter weight 375 bullets I tend to have better luck with the H and IMR 4350's, although IMR4064, Reloader 15 and even Varget will probably get a lot of recommendations.

My rifle really likes the 270 gr TSX with RL 15.

I am not a real sho nuff Barnes X fan, but I have seen that particular bullet used on many buffalo in the .375 H&H and it really works well on the big heavy animals..

I use IMR-4064 and RL-15 in my .375 H&H with all bullets.

Ray,
A while back you said to someone else to try a 270 gr bullet over 70 gr of IMR 4064. Let me tell you the deer & antelope around here don't like that load with the Speer 270 gr. BTSP.

The load for that bullet (270 gr TSX) is 74.0gr RL-15. Sub-MOA in very rifle that I've tried it in (4 different rifles) and chronos right at 2,700fps. Great load.

I've had the best luck with RL15 / 270 TSX. With the usual "this might be too hot for your rifle" warning, my best load is 74 gr. of RL15 in Rem. brass....that's a max load for me, but the groups really started to tighten up (in a very linear fashion) above 70 gr.

I've also get spectacular accuracy with the 300 gr. TSX, using 67 gr. of IMR4064 in WW brass. Both loads are with CCI 250 primers.

My biggest problem was the bullets wanting to stick in my RCBS seating die - they'd stick so hard, I'd end up pulling them right back out! I ended up having to lap the seater plug out, and I still have the odd problem - I've taken to dabbing a little sizing lube on the ogive. The shape of those TSXs must be a little too close to the shape of the seater..... Confused Funny thing is, no other bullets stick like that, only the TSXs.

Just finished up the mods on my 375 and now working up loads...older Savage 110 action - NOT DGR, laminated stock with home made 3/4 length alum bedding block and 375 length mag, 74 gr RL15, Horn 270 SP seated in cannelure - 3.58", NO crimp, 22" bbl including muzzle brake, 2650 f/s and 1/2"-5/8" c-c cloverleafs, basically one triangular hole...72-73 gr RL15, Horn 300 gr RN, about 2400 f/s and 1" groups - still working on this one.

Think I will stop when I get the 300 gr load worked down, for the things I shoot. The Hornadys always do a good job putting down anything I hit and are much cheaper than the "premium" bullets.

I've never had much luck with Barnes bullets other thand the coated ones as far as my accuracy requirements go...in any of my rifles so I don't bother with them anymore...besides being pricey I don't like their "over penetration" on the several deer and elk shot with them when I was present. Nosler Parts, Accu's and BT's, Hornady SP and SS, Rem Coreloks and Win PP, Swifts in my 9.3x62, Speer 350 MT in my 416 Taylor, pretty much form the core of my bullet use although I do try most anything new on the market just to see what happens.

I've always been partial to H414 in the 375 H&H

I use only Nosler Partitions but the most accurate load in my 375's is a 260gr NP in front of IMR4350. I'm not at home so don't know the charge but it's under the book max as I NEVER load to the max. It has NEVER failed on African game no matter what the size.

WyoJoe,

I'm just over in Wheatland. I've been using the 270 TSX for a couple years, and have been very happy with it. I've had good results using Varget, or N550. I've used it around here for deer, and have also taken Gemsbok, Kudu, Mountain Zebra, and wild boar with it, and the bullet has performed perfectly.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Joe,
I like some bullets better than others and I have not used the Speers for a number of years now, but I of the opinnion that there is no such thing as bullet failure on deer with the .375, there are just bullets that work better than other...270 or 300 grs of bullet is pretty decisive on deer size game, even if it fails to expand or explodes.

SORRY, I don't know what's happened: it was an answer to "CZ's Safari Classic" topic Roll Eyes
Hi WyoJoe,
I recently bought one and was happy to find it because it is normally not imported here in France, in addition it is a 375 H&H and this caliber is not mentioned in CZ's classic safari catolog!
It is marked "Classic Safari CZ USA Kansas City".
I agree with you: wood and stock design are a lot better comparing to Magnum or Safari models, but mine does not have cross bolt like your one, probably due to the caliber?

Good luck, Fjold. Maybe you'll be able to bring your pictures to 5-dogs. My brother and I hope to be there in a year or so.
