My BSS Searcy 470 project continues.
The ramp on the gun retained the front sight via press fit. As I was hitting about 2-3 inches low at 50 yards, I am attempting to fit a 6.5mm sight in place of the 7mm the gun came with. Butch is sending me a sight that he feels will work, but in the mean time I bought one to play with from Midway. The new NECG sights utilize a set screw to hold them in- much more convenient to replace. As the dovetail fit is not as tight, do you guys think that shooting loose may be a problem? Could happen at a bad time. I don't want to lock-tite the screw, as it is such a tiny hex screw that I don't know that the miniature hex key would be capable of loosening it. I think the new ramps use some kind of ball detant system.

I doubt very seriously that you're shooting loose the front sight. The dovetail on the Recknagel (NECG) sights isn't conducive to such, and if the sight were loose enough to affect your POI you'd be able to tell it by just touching it. Besides, if it were loose, you'd be all over the place.

Realistically, you're probably holding the gun a little differently than whomever regulated it. Which is fine - as long as you're shooting consistently with it. Try the new sight and i'm sure it'll work out.

Your loads might be shooting low because it is wintertime. I found that at 20 degrees F, my .500 NE double shoots 6" low of where it shoots at 110 degrees F (50 yard target). But that appears to be due to the temperature sensitivity of IMR4831 powder. So you might actually need 2 front sight blades if you plan to use the rifle in both winter and summer.

I never shoot my double in the winter time, that takes a lot of steel nerve with a frosty cheek! Good on you!
