.577 T-rex feeding issues?

Hello everyone, long time since I have posted. My job situation took a major dump due to the down sizing at my company. Went from full time to part time. Enough of that.

I loaded some .577 T-rex with some 750 grain Barnes solid Flat Nose bullets and they will not feed at all. I have been using the conical Barnes bullets with no issues. The brass is from A-Square.

This normal for a bolt action?

The rifle is a custom build from a local gunsmith on a CZ550 action. Actually he is also a member on this forum.

Tongo, tough luck on the job front. Hopefully things will get better before they get worse. Your situation is not at all unusual in a bolt rifle, and certainly not in a T-Rex. Most builders will request what ammunition, or at least what bullet, will be used before the gun is finished, and will work the action to chamber, feed, and eject that round. Once you change the bullet or OAL, it's a whole new ballgame. The newer solids with the large flat meplats are particularly susceptible to giving feeding fits. Either stick with what worked, or have a gunsmith try to rework the action for the new round.

Well i dont own a trex but ready bad brass is a issue with this caliber. Mayne the gunsmith got something wrong feed ramps etc?

If it was fine with the original conical Barnes, it's obvious the flat points are the issue, which is often the case. A-square brass is usually of the highest quality.

I remember Darcy Echols posted about a larger caliber rifle that would not feed flat nosed stuff out of the magazine, no way no how. It was a matter of there just not being enough room in the mag box to allow the bullet to clear the front edge of the magazine. I'll see if I can find the post for you! It had good pics....

Its not that big a problem! Watch where the nose of the bullet is jamming and think carefully about whats causing it. It ususally is at the bottom of the ramp but can also be on the sides of the feed ramp. My bet is thats whats happeing with your CZ550. There is usually a sharp shoulder on the side of the ramp where it meets the action thats causing it. Remove that ( a little at a time) with a Dremel tool and grinding stone series ( coarse, medium, Fine) and Then polish. If your uncomfortable with this, any decent gunsmith could resolve it easily. I had the same problem with my T-Rex ( although built on a Enfied action) and fixed it as described above. Other causes get more complicated and depending on the rifle can require a new custom machined follower and ramp reshaping. One good thing about the CZ550 is that its easy to get to work with all bullet shapes with usually very little effort. My .600OK lives on Flat Nosed bullets with wide meplats that most other guns will choke on.-Rob

The T-Rex has so much penetration with any RN 750 grain solid there is little need for more from a FN solid.
