Have you shot either bison or cape buffalo? I have and they aren't that much different in "toughness" IMHO. I have shot a few more bison that cape buffalo, and actually I would say that the bison can soak up the big lead a little better.

You gentlemen caught me I am a "counterfeit" as Ray says. I have never shot any animals. I don't even have a 500 anything. I sold my 50 Beowulf to a board member last month so I don't even have that! I just don't know what I am thinking sometimes, trying to pull one over on the likes of you guys, will all you experience hunting buffalo with those 500 Jeffery, 505 Gibbs, and 500 NE.
I am such an ASS_CLOWN, hopefully someday I will actually work up the nerve to hunt some animals.
By the way, I am sorry for that pathetic loser post I deleted and replaced by this one. I shall delete the previous post too! It is afterall, off topic (this is a boar hunt thread)

ASS_CLOWNThis is a picture I posted on "Big Game Hunting". I said it was what happened to a cow elk after I shot it with my 500 AHR (which I forgot I don't have).
Truth is this was emailed to me by a guy I know who DOES hunt. It is the exit wound from a 270 Win. I forget what bullets he was shooting. He said the range was ~ 250 yards.
Sorry for being such an ASS_CLOWN. It is a good thing that gentlemen like Ray, jeffeosso, and Bob are around to help keep me honest!

It is for the best actually! I never could handle the recoil of my 50 Beowulf, I dare not even imagine what that big 500 would have kicked like!! OUCH!! 
That 270 is MIGHTY impressive ain't it. I mean that is a hell of a hole in that elk's rib cage!!!

I think they will work perfectly. See my post on the "Big Game Hunting" forum concerning .510" diameter bullets for elk. I think they illustrate the performance of the .510" diameter Woodleigh well (albeit I was using 570 grain and I assume you will be using 535 grain). By the way, I have noticed very little difference in terminal performance between the 535gr @ 2420 fps and 570 gr @ 2350 fps Woodleigh SPs.

Woodleighs .510 cal 440gn blackpowder bullet is used here for same- Corresponds to the .577 bullet PC mentions in that calibre.
It is less expensive than the heavy jackets as well.

those woodleigh's will be perfect mate...I use the 650 gr woodleigh BP .577 bullets in my Nyati and I get a a bit of expansion on grassy's....well there is a huge wound out the other side at any rate.

DUH! a 600 gr .510 "may" out penetrate a 535 grain.. can you say SD?
american BISON may not require solids.. but, then again, from your own penetration data, the softs dont seem to go in very far...
cape BUFFALO... no resemblence to your statements

WhitworthHaven't tried the Woodleighs on hog, but I have used Hawk Dead Softs as Rusty mentioned in my .416 Rem on Hogs, and they are damn effective. They expand exceptionally well. But from everything I've heard about the Woodleighs, I can't imagine that you will need anything else.

The Woodleigh bullets have an maximum impact velocity. They should work just fine if you keep within the velocity of the bullet design. The .475 5oograin soft point has a velocity rated at 2250 I think. I lost the little paper that came in the box. What about the Barnes X bullets? Don't go to the A-Square Lion Load, they will blow up on impact.
