500 or 510 whisper
Need some help on a project.
What would be the cheapest way to slowly launch
50 BMG projectiles in a custom bolt gun.
I have located the 1in9 and 1in10 barrels but
have not decided on anything else yet, such as
500 whisper,50 Alaskan,50-110
The purpose is just for fun target shooting in
the 1000 fps to maybe 1500 fps with GI bullets
thanks

The CHEAPEST would be a Contender or Encore frame with a 50-70 with a propperly throated fast twist barrel. Encore being more versitile. Cheapest might not be what your after.

SS,
the CHEAPEST bolt gun would be a 500 jab... 460 weatherby with a long throat

Thanks for the info guys
I am still leaning towards M98 with 1 in 10
500(460 cut down) or 510(338 Lapua cut down) Whisper and turning the rims down some.
The Lapua brass is a little cheaper,
anybody have any other ideas?

SS,
the only difference is the belt on your two choices... the 338 lapua is a "better" cased 416 rigby... which , when a belt is added, is a 378/416/460 weatherby.... zero difference in results...

cheers

A reamer might be about $150, so it makes sense to find a gunsmith who already has one. It occurs to me that you should probably find out what chamberings are available from Pac-Nor. .500 A-Square and .500 Jeffery both seem like reasonable possibilities. If you are interested in moderating the velocities, a very slow burning .50 BMG powder (like milsurp IMR 5010) would produce sluggish results with a safely full case.

pacnor's LISTED chambers

"standard" 505 and 500 jeffe
http://www.pac-nor.com/standard/

"wildcats" 500 a2 and 510 wells

My jeffe has a .350 longer throat for launching milsurp, thanks to RAB's suggestion. Haven't done it yet, and it will be a single shot with those bullets, but I can still play with them.

If you want cost effective, I'll still go with a 460 weatherby based .510... whatever you want to call it, but full size length, so you CAN hunt with it, if you choose...

Or, do a search in this forum for 50 BMD .. nearly as ugly as the 45 blazer round.

Starline sell 50 Alaskan and 50-110
http://www.starlinebrass.com/
and I should imagine it's lot cheaper than Lapua brass, though they don't sell the same sizes.
Lapua brass is very good quality.
I have just received some Starline 50-110 brass and it appears to be good quality, only problem is 250 minimum buy online.
Whatever you do don't buy Bertram brass.

As far as the 50 Alaskan and 50 110
I was hoping to use a 98 action maybe I will try to find a P-17 action to go rimmed.
I might go with the 460 WM upped
to 50 like Jeffy suggests
thanks guys
